90s Alt-Rock Icon Revisits Breakthrough Song 30 Years Later

Alanis Morissette is taking fans back to her early years in music as the Canadian-American music icon reflects on the song that cemented her name in the music industry.

Known for her emotionally raw rock music and her defining voice of 1990s alternative rock, she continues to capture a new generation of listeners with her notable classic hits, among them the 1996 song “Ironic.”

In an Instagram update, the "Queen of Alt-Rock Angst" brought back the song that defined an era.

“Me and Stephane Sednaoui on the snowy streets of Brooklyn, expressing at least four parts of me in the car…. Feels like yesterday…and a whole other lifetime. #lifehasafunnyway. Xoxoxox,” she wrote.

In the clip, the music video featured Morissette driving through a snowy road and singing four versions of herself while in the car.

The throwback post instantly captured the attention of her followers, with the majority commenting on how it brought back sweet memories of the 90s.

“Soundtrack of my teenage years,” one wrote.

“A 90s classic that’s immortal and timeless,” another said.

“Muse of a generation,” a fan commented.

“Happy Birthday 30 years IRÓNIC,” a follower added.

Moreover, fans are thanking the seven-time Grammy winner for writing and creating such a masterpiece.

“One of my most favorite songs. Thank you!” a follower mentioned.

“Thank you, Jagged Little Pill,” a commenter echoed.

The third single from her award-winning album Jagged Little Pill, “Ironic,” peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominated the chart for 32 weeks.

With this, the song became her highest-charting single in the U.S. to date.

Nineteen years after “Ironic” was released, the singer-songwriter performed the song at The Late Late Show with James Corden, giving it a playful twist with updated lyrics.

At the time of its release, the song faced criticism for its so-called “misuse” of irony, such as “rain on a wedding day” and “traffic jam when you’re already late.”

This sparked debates among listeners and critics.

Morissette has addressed the lyrical issue and explained how she balances precision and creativity in her use of language, sometimes viewing it as artistic experimentation.

"Although there are times where I'm grammatically very intense and very perfectionistic, there are other times where clearly I don't care and I make up words and I play with words linguistically like they're paint,” she told host Ricky Camilleri as mentioned by Huffpost, adding "And at the same time, it is ironic that a song called 'Ironic' isn't filled with ironies. And I love that song, and I love that era."
