Did You Realize That Colston Loveland Set an NFL Rookie Playoff Record?

Watching Colston Loveland’s development as a rookie was one of my favorite things that happened during this past football season. It wasn’t always pretty, particularly early in the season. And after a slow start, I wasn’t sure we would reach the point we are currently at with the Chicago Bears tight end. But all is well that ends well. Because not only did we see Loveland grow into a trusted target for quarterback Caleb Williams, he did so while setting a new rookie record.

Loveland now holds the NFL record for most receiving yards by a rookie tight end in postseason history, which is a pretty neat accomplishment in my book:

Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland set an NFL rookie record

Colston Loveland wrapped up his rookie season with the Bears by collecting 58 catches, racking up a team-leading 713 receiving yards, and scoring six touchdowns in 16 games. It’s not just that Loveland got better as the season went on, but it’s when he played the best that stands out to me. Loveland finishing the postseason with a record-setting 193 receiving yards on 12 catches is impressive. It stinks that the Bears aren’t playing in the NFC Championship Game. However, I feel good about the team’s chances of getting there in the future so long as Loveland is out running routes in Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s offense and hauling in passes from quarterback Caleb Williams.

SIMPLY THE BEST: Why PFF Gave Colston Loveland and the Bears’ 2025 NFL Draft Class Top Grade

In addition to some good-looking stat lines, the advanced analytics appear to have nothing but love for Colston Loveland. Pro Football Focus lists Loveland as the site’s third-highest-graded tight end. Only George Kittle (90.7) of the San Francisco 49ers and Dalton Kincaid (86.8) of the Buffalo Bills had a better overall grade than Loveland’s 84.0. Loveland was at his best as a pass-catcher in 2025, earning an 86.2 receiving grade from PFF that ranked only behind Kittle (91.0). Quality stuff out of the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

I hope you don’t see those numbers and think that Loveland is just a one-trick pony. His 70.0 run-blocking grade ranked 13th among 87 tight ends. Loveland’s run-blocking prowess and Chicago’s willingness to run the rock helps open the University of Michigan product on play action passes. Witnessing Loveland’s development as a blocker and seeing him bloom into a full-blown weapon in the Bears offense was an absolute treat. I look forward to seeing more of it in 2026.

My favorite Colston Loveland number is 123.6 — which is the passer rating Bears quarterback Caleb Williams posted when targeting the rookie tight end this season. Williams completed 58 of 81 passes (71.6 percent) and did not throw an interception when throwing to Loveland this season. Another number that sticks out to me is 36, which is how many of Loveland’s receptions from QB1 resulted in a first down. You’re doing something right as a pass-catcher when 36 of your 58 catches move the chains.

WHY BEARS ROOKIE KYLE MONANGAI WAS A BRIGHT SPOT IN THE BEARS PLAYOFF LOSS

Colston Loveland was targeted 10 times in the Bears’ season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round. He caught four passes for 56 yards, but finished the game in concussion protocol. Injuries are a part of the game, so I’ve been doing my best not to dwell on the thought of how things could have been different in overtime if Chicago would have had its best pass-catcher on the field during overtime. Even still … Ihave moments where I think about it. But in the end, I stop and remember how much of a pleasant surprise Loveland’s rookie season was and dream about what could be on the horizon.
