It was a solid day for the Cubs‘ minor league squads as they combined for a 3-1 record on Thursday. The Iowa Cubs broke a late tie and came up with a win in their matchup. The Knoxville Smokies won thanks to some dominant pitching. South Bend struggled on the mound and suffered the lone loss of the day, while Myrtle Beach took care of business in comeback fashion. Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs picked up a win over the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) in a bit of a back-and-forth game. Andrew Wantz started on the mound and was pretty errant through his 3.2 innings. Wantz walked five batters in the outing and allowed three runs. Through four innings, Iowa trailed 3-1 with its lone run coming on an Owen Miller RBI single.
In the fifth, Miller came up clutch again, tying the game with a two-RBI single, scoring BJ Murray and Moises Ballesteros. With the game evened up at 3-3, Ben Cowles broke the stalemate with a sac fly, giving Iowa their first lead of the game, 4-3. However, in the sixth, Toledo tied the game back up on an RBI single.
The Cubs fired right back in the seventh, though. James Triantos gave Iowa the lead right back with a sac fly, and then in the eighth, Jonathan Long added some insurance with a solo homer, making it 6-4, which is how the game ended.
It should be noted that Antoine Kelly tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and lowered his ERA to 0.84 on the season. He could be a name to watch as a potential addition to the big league bullpen at some point soon.
Big arm in the @IowaCubs bullpen to keep an eye on that might not be a household name yet is LHP Antoine Kelly.Lowered his ERA to 0.84 with 2.0 scoreless innings tonight. Has touched 99 mph. Chicago native that was a 2nd round pick of the Brewers in 2019. Yet to make debut.

Knoxville’s bats weren’t terribly active on Thursday, but it didn’t really matter in their 1-0 win over the Columbus Clingstones (Braves) thanks to some dominant pitching. Nick Dean started on the mound for the Smokies, and he was brilliant. Dean tossed six innings of four-hit ball, struck out seven, and walked just one. From there, Erian Rodriguez took over and threw two scoreless frames with three strikeouts, and Evan Taylor picked up the save with a scoreless ninth, despite issuing a pair of walks.
The lone run of the ballgame came in walkoff fashion in the bottom of the ninth. The Smokies loaded the bases with a base hit and a pair of walks for Alex Ramirez, who delivered a game-winning, one-out, walk-off single. Despite combining for just four hits on the day, Knoxville found a way to come up with a win.

— Knoxville Smokies (@smokiesbaseball) July 3, 2026High-A South Bend Cubs
While Knoxville thrived on the mound on Thursday, South Bend struggled mightily against the Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins). Naizer Mulé started and gave up four runs on five hits and three walks over three innings of work. After that, Jackson Brockett was tagged for three runs over 3.2 frames.
Despite the rough start on the mound, South Bend did get out to a lead after three innings. In the first, they picked up the game’s first run on a bases-loaded walk. Then, in the third, singles from Angel Cepeda and Matt Halbach, plus a ground-rule double from Miguel Useche, tied the game at 4-4. Following that, Michael Hallquist gave the Cubs the lead on an RBI groundout.
Unfortunately, that’s where the scoring ended for South Bend in this one. The 5-4 lead held up until the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Sky Carp tied the game. In the seventh, they put up three runs to take an 8-5 lead. Then, in the eighth, they put an exclamation point on this one with a five-run frame, en route to a 13-5 win.

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans took home a relatively smooth 5-2 win over the Hickory Crawdads (Rangers) on Thursday. Myrtle Beach got out to an early lead in the second when Jose Silva drew a bases-loaded walk. They couldn’t add on, but they left the second inning up 1-0.
That lead held up until the fourth when Hickory scored a pair of runs to jump out in front. The first run came on a steal of home, and the second was on an RBI double. Both runs came off Pierce Coppola, who was solid through his four-inning outing. Coppola allowed the pair of runs on four hits, but he also racked up six strikeouts.
In the sixth, with the score still 2-1, Derniche Valdez tied things up with an RBI triple. Following that, Valdez scored on a wild pitch to give the Pelicans the lead again. After a scoreless seventh, the Pelicans came up with a pair of sacrifice flies in the eighth, boosting the lead to 5-2, which held up as the final score.
