WHOA: Philip Rivers is Interviewing for the Buffalo Bills Head Coaching Job

The Buffalo Bills could conceivably go from a coach who racked up 98 regular-season wins to having one who has never coached in an NFL game. And while I’m not sure Philip Rivers is the top candidate for the Bills’ head coaching position, he will get a chance to interview for the position.

Getting this push notification made me audibly gasp:

It’s not that Philip Rivers doesn’t have head-coaching experience. He does! Rivers is the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School (in Fairhope, Alabama) where he coaches his son, Gunner — a top high school quarterback prospect. That is a pretty neat, and wholesome, storyline. However, going from coaching your son at the high school level to operating with reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen is something entirely different. Frankly, I appreciate that Rivers has the audacity to interview for a gig that requires such a giant leap. Good for him. We should all strive to take such professional risks.

Philip Rivers to Interview for Bills Head Coaching Position

Philip Rivers was part of one of the wildest NFL storylines this year. Coming back at age 44 to quarterback three games for the Indianapolis Colts after being retired during the 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons is one of those things that you’d see in a rejected Hollywood script. But it happened in real life. The Colts went 0-3 in Rivers’ starts. He completed 63 percent of his passes, threw for 544 yards, and tossed more touchdowns (4) than interceptions (3) while posting an 80.2 passer rating. Not bad for a grandpa.

HOW UNRETIREMENT IMPACTED PHILIP RIVERS’ HALL OF FAME ELIGIBILITY

That Rivers’ next step could be going from playing Bills quarterback Josh Allen in his last career playoff game to coaching him is another Hollywood script-worthy storyline. That he could replace Sean McDermott, who was Buffalo’s head coach at the time, I wonder how it’ll play out.
