Dozens of schools, museums, libraries and even restaurants across the Chicago area will be closed Friday due to brutally cold conditions as an extreme cold warning for all of northeastern Illinois continues.
The closures include more than 100 schools, including Chicago Public Schools, the largest school district in the state.
“After carefully monitoring the forecast, it has been determined that the predicted frigid temperatures, combined with wind chills that could reach -35 degrees, will be unsafe for students and staff and for travel to and from school,” CPS said Thursday in an announcement. “Students should not report to school, as the buildings will be closed. Additionally, all CPS facilities will be closed tomorrow, including all school buildings, gymnasiums, and Central and Network Offices.”
Iconic Chicago restaurant Manny’s Deli also announced it would be closed Friday to keep staff and customers safe.
The conditions weren’t expected to get much better as the day goes on, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, with a high of zero degrees, and some areas expected to remain below zero.

Museums
Several of Chicago’s most popular museums will be closed Friday due to the cold, including the Field Museum, the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Chicago History Museum, according to the according to the institutions’ social media accounts.
Libraries
More than 20 libraries across the Chicago area announced they would be closed or have delayed openings Friday, including libraries in Wilmette, Highland Park, Carol Stream, Mundelein, Matteson and Midlothian.

According to a post from the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, Illinois senior centers will be closed Friday.
“Due to extreme cold weather conditions on January 23, the senior centers will be closed and there will be no walk-in road tests for the safety of residents and staff,” the office said.
The Circuit Court of Cook County will also be closed, the state said in an announcement.

The Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier will offer buy one, get one free admission for the day, according to its social media channels.
The Museum of Science and Industry also announced it would remain open Friday.
