Ricky Schroeder is facing backlash for his politics-fueled tribute to Dolly Parton.
Schroeder, 56, rose to stardom on the hit ’80s sitcom Silver Spoons. The show, which ran from 1982 to 1987, followed the young son of wealthy playboy Edward Stratton III as they lived a fun life in his mansion. In adulthood, Schroeder starred on NYPD Blue for three seasons. Now known for voicing his politics on social media, Schroeder took to Instagram to honor Parton, whom he got to know while starring in the 2015 American made-for-television drama film Coat of Many Colors, which was based on the legendary musician’s life. Parton died at 80 on Tuesday, Aug. 25, following a brief battle with cancer, PEOPLE shared. However, it was his statements in his tribute that are currently fielding significant backlash.
“I didn’t agree with her advocating for Transgender & Covid Vaccine support…but Loved her anyway. Thank you for choosing me Dolly to be your Movie Daddy,” Schroeder captioned his photo, which showed the actor smiling alongside Parton. In the comments, several people voiced their distaste for his statements.

A frequent face on social media, Schroeder shares his political views regularly. But for most fans who were raised on Silver Spoons and remember him as Ricky Stratton from the show, the star is nearly unrecognizable. Sporting long hair, glasses, a beard, and a hat, Schroeder recently spoke about the killing of Charlie Kirk.

Not really. Schroeder’s last appearance onscreen was in 2016’s Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, the sequel to Coat of Many Colors. In the film, Schroeder’s character, family patriarch Lee Parton, makes sacrifices to have enough money to buy his wife the wedding ring he could never afford, while the children also sacrifice their own Christmas presents to give their mother this special gift.
