New paperback editions of the Hunger Games prequel book, Sunrise on the Reaping, will be released later this year, ahead of the November 20, 2026, premiere of the movie.
Sunrise on the Reaping is the latest installment in the larger Hunger Games franchise. The book and the upcoming movie are both prequel stories to the original trilogy of books, although the story is set after the most recent Hunger Games book/movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
This new story centers on Haymitch Abernathy, the complex but ultimately lovable mentor of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark from the original trilogy. In Sunrise on the Reaping, however, Haymitch is a teenager himself, and he enters into his own Hunger Games in the Second Quarter Quell.
As reported by People, and shared in a TikTok that was reposted by the official Hunger Games account, two new editions of the book will be released this year. The first, the trade paperback edition, will be released on August 4th, and a brand-new box set of the full series, including this paperback copy, will be available to purchase on September 1st.
The second paperback edition features a new movie tie-in cover. This copy will also be released on September 1st.
