The Angels are reportedly bringing back third baseman Yoán Moncada on a one-year, $4 million deal.
The Angels have not announced the move, which was reported by multiple outlets on Wednesday.
Moncada, 30, hit .234 with 12 home runs and a .783 OPS last season with the Angels, although he played in just 84 games around various injuries.
Moncada, a switch-hitter, also provides the Angels with another left-handed bat, a week after they acquired left-handed-hitting outfielder Josh Lowe. The only other lefty in the everyday lineup was first baseman Nolan Schanuel. Moncada hit all 12 of his homers, with an .815 OPS, while hitting from the left side.
When healthy, Moncada offers disciplined at-bats, with some power. His 11% walk rate last season was above the major league average of 8%.
Defensively, Moncada did not live up to expectations last season. His range was rated among the worst in the majors by Baseball Savant last season.
Prior to re-signing Moncada, the Angels’ options at third included Vaughn Grissom, Christian Moore, Oswald Peraza, Kyren Paris and rookie Denzer Guzman. If Moncada is healthy and playing third, that leaves those players to compete for time at second.
Moncada missed time last season with a thumb sprain suffered in spring training, and then a knee injured that slowed him throughout the season’s final four months. Even when Moncada was active for the final three months, he was often limited to swinging left-handed.
