ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — For the first time since firing Sean McDermott, Bills owner Terry Pegula spoke to the media in a 53-minute press conference on Wednesday. Pegula said the decision to move on from the nine-year coach was his own.

“That was my decision. I could be wrong,” Pegula said.
Pegula explained that he made the decision after observing the locker room in Denver. One scene he highlighted was the team’s quarterback, Josh Allen, with his head down, crying.
“First thing I noticed was our quarterback, and with his head down, crying,” Pegula said.
Despite the loss, Pegula believed the pass to Brandin Cooks in overtime, which was ruled an interception, should have been a catch. “First thing I said to (Allen), I said that was a catch,” Pegula said.
So when asked if McDermott would be in Buffalo for the 2026 season had they won, Pegula, who made the decision to fire him, had this to say. “I don’t want to speculate on that. It is what it is,” Pegula said.
So Saturday’s loss was more the straw that broke the camel’s back for a team that’s come up short in the playoffs seven years in a row.
“I felt like we hit the proverbial playoff wall,” Pegula said.
Pegula also mentioned that quarterback Josh Allen had no input in the decision. “I talked to him afterwards. And that conversation will stay private. But, he had no input,” Pegula said.
Players learned about McDermott’s firing through the media, general manager Brandon Beane said, “We had a we had an exit team meeting like we do every season, the day after show, so that was Sunday. Terry’s decision came on Monday or that’s when we were informed of his decision. So the players had already left.”
Beane, who was promoted to president of football operations while remaining as general manager, denied any power play in McDermott’s firing. “For somebody to question my character like that is B.S. and I’ve never done that,” Beane said.
The team has started a coaching search that is “100% open,” and Allen will have input.
