For decades, Beach Boysfans and rock aficionados have wondered if their unreleased album, Adult/Child, would ever officially see the light of day. Recorded during the mid-1970s, when the group released their critically acclaimed The Beach Boys Love You, this long-lost album has existed only in bootleg form, traded amongst those curious about Brian Wilson’s eccentric musical genius.
Now, nearly fifty years after it was recorded, Adult/Child gets its first official release. It’s part of We Gotta Groove: The Brother Studio Years, a new Capitol/UMe box set that takes a deep look at the group (Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine) during a pivotal time.
The Beach Boys Love You has since been called the band’s “punk” album, thanks to Wilson’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics, blown-out synthesizers, and gritty production. There are elements of T. Rex glam rock (“Mona”) and new wave (“Ding Dang”). The album divided fans upon its release—it's not what people thought a Beach Boys album would sound like—it’s since been reassessed as an eccentric
But what has fascinated fans since then is Adult/Child. Recorded with arranger Dick Reynolds (The Four Freshmen), the album “leans into big-band swing, lounge textures, fitness jingles, and some of Brian’s most disarmingly intimate originals,” per a press release.
“I wrote a song for Frank Sinatra once called ‘Still I Dream Of It.’ He didn’t say yes to the song,” Brian Wilson once remarked in an interview. "It was a beautiful song about loneliness and hope. The song ended up on an album named Adult/Child, which was filled with songs like it. It was a Beach Boys album that never came out.”
Adult/Child follows the autobiographical path that Brian Wilson embarked on Love You. The LP was readied for release, but ultimately shelved. The album’s “mixture of big-band pastiche, autobiographical confession, and unabashed eccentricity” confused the label and concerned some of the band's members. The album was stuffed into the Beach Boys’ vault, and that’s where it has stayed for nearly fifty years.
Of course, the album’s songs have found their way amongst tape traders and the internet. We Gotta Groove assembles Adult/Child in a coherent sequence, giving fans the experience more akin to Brian Wilson’s vision. But, as the announcement states, the prominent contributions from Mike, Al, Carl and Dennis add warmth and cohesion to Brian’s idiosyncratic material, revealing Adult/Child as more of a Beach Boys project than its mythology has often implied.”
In total, the 73-track collection contains 35 unreleased and 22 newly mixed tracks. The majority of the album sessions (Love You, Adult/Child) are on three LPs, with additional outtakes, alternate mixes, and demos on three CDs (which also include the same tracks as the vinyl). The

We Gotta Groove will give fans a chance to appreciate the late Brian Wilson. The singer, songwriter, and producer died on June 11, just days short of his 83rd birthday.
Wilson’s primary cause of death was “respiratory arrest,” with sepsis and cystitis listed as contributing factors. Wilson famously struggled with his mental health throughout his life, and in 2024, his family revealed he was diagnosed with dementia and placed under a conservatorship.
In the weeks after his death, many paid tribute to his musical genius and the effect he had on their lives.
