Actor and comedian Thomas "Tom" Wilson, known for his role as 1950s bully Biff Tannen in Back to the Future, recently revealed how he really feels about the beloved '80s film.
During an appearance on the January 20 episode of fellow actor Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You, Wilson shared he's had complicated feelings about the hit 1985 film.
While speaking to Rosenbaum, Wilson wanted fans to know that he has "been incredibly blessed and fortunate to do something like Back to the Future." However, he stated that his "relationship is complicated" with the franchise.
"Because for a while there, it's the greatest thing that ever happened to me. And as an actor, for a long period of time, it is the worst possible thing that could have happened to me as an actor, you know, for a long time," said Wilson during the interview.
He explained that he wasn't prepared for the film's enduring popularity and how it would impact his career. Wilson then said he used to joke that he had wished Eric Stoltz, the original Marty McFly, would have remained as the film's lead. As fans are aware, Stoltz was replaced by Michael J. Fox after weeks of filming the first movie.
"For a long time, my little snide remark was, 'Hey, I wished Eric Stoltz was Marty. Maybe the movie would have been less good. I could have had a career,'" said Wilson during the podcast interview. "But back in the day, when I was trying to get out from under its foot, right? And then I had to accept then, you know, years go by and you have to accept things, that it's not the greatest thing that happened or the worst thing that happened. It's just this gigantic thing that happened."
Wilson also starred in the two Back to the Future sequels, Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III, which were released in 1989 and 1990, as reported by IMDb. Wilson played an older and more powerful version of Biff and his grandson, Griff, in Back to the Future Part II. Meanwhile, in the western-themed Back to the Future Part III, Wilson took on the role of Biff's great-grandfather, Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen.
Following the release of Back to the Future Part III, Wilson appeared in several popular projects, like Freaks and Geeks, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Big Love, per IMDb.
