The Iron Bowl between Mississippi State and Ole Miss is one of many notable rivalries in the SEC. Now, a former Bulldogs defensive back will be among a list of players who have experienced both sides of it.
Tony Mitchell, who spent a season in Starkville after a year at both Alabama and the junior college level, has committed to Ole Miss out of the transfer portal. He announced the news via his X account on Tuesday.

— Tony Mitchell (@DatGuyTM) January 20, 2026This was a relatively decent year for Mitchell, who collected 25 tackles and 4.0 tackles for a loss for the Bulldogs in 2025. That came after he played at East Mississippi Junior College in 2024, recording 16 tackles while being credited with a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Mitchell’s college career began as a four-star recruit at Alabama as part of Nick Saban’s 2023 class, where he was ranked the nation’s ninth-ranked safety. There, he appeared in seven games.
Twenty-six players have now committed to Ole Miss from the transfer portal. Mitchell is now the fifth defensive back that Pete Golding has landed during this transfer cycle. Safeties Joenel Aguero (Georgia) and Edwin Joseph (Florida State), cornerbacks Sharif Denson (Florida) and Jay Crawford (Auburn) are the others.
