ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The George Eastman Museum has secured $500,000 in federal funding to renovate the mansion, considered the world’s oldest photography museum.
The funding is included in the 2026 interior spending bill that has passed in both the House and the Senate. The museum will use the funding to restore chimneys, parapets, and roof railings at the home of the Kodak founder and philanthropist.
The goal is restore the mansion’s 11 original chimneys and 13 parapets over the next two years and stabilize them for the next 100 years. The chimneys and parapets have been around since 1905 and have been gradually damaged by Rochester’s winter weather. In addition, moisture has seeped into the mansion, damaging plaster walls and ceilings. It has also caused wood to rot and portions of the roof railings to break off.
The museum is home to one of the earliest film archives and has welcomed visitors from across the world. The mansion and its gardens are considered a National Historic Landmark.
