It says a lot about an person who looks to give back to those who helped send them on the road to success.
That would describe former San Diego State University and Major League Baseball pitcher Stephen Strasburg.
The San Diego native, a graduate of West Hills High School, is using his nonprofit, the Aztec Baseball Alumni Foundation, to help current and future Aztecs have an opportunity to achieve the success he had during his playing days, both on the collegiate level in San Diego and the professional level in Washington, DC.
The ultimate goal is to revitalize the Aztec baseball program and also turn Tony Gwynn Stadium into a premier showcase for the next generation of local baseball talent.

(File photo by Megan Ellis/Times of San Diego)Strasburg, a three-time All-Star, who spent all 13 of his professional seasons with the Washington Nationals (World Series MVP in 2019), is behind the first-ever SDSU Baseball Dinner on the Diamond event, slated for Saturday, Jan. 31 at SDSU.
A number of former MLB players and others with the love of baseball running through their veins are slated to attend the dinner. The event is open to the public.
“The Aztec Baseball Alumni Foundation isn’t just about baseball — it’s about San Diego,”
Strasburg said in a written release. “It’s going to take all of us, but together we can honor Tony’s legacy and transform Tony Gwynn Stadium and SDSU baseball into a hub for local baseball talent.”
Proceeds from the end-of-month event will go straight toward funding program enhancements, facility improvements, team travel and competition opportunities, player equipment and scholarships for student-athletes.
Engaging the San Diego community and Aztec baseball alumni
“This event originated through conversations between Coach Kevin Vance and myself, as we wanted to create something that would truly engage the San Diego community and Aztec baseball alumni,” noted Miles Leyva, director of baseball events and fundraising at San Diego State University. “Our goal is to do something that has never been done before and position the SDSU Baseball program as a true cornerstone of the community.”
According to Leyva, a sizable amount of planning and collaboration has gone into bringing the event to life.
“From the social media efforts led by InnoVision Marketing Group, to the grassroots outreach involving San Diego restaurants and local companies, it has been a collective effort from start to finish,” Leyva said. “None of this would have been possible without the support of our athletic staff and the contributions of Shari Brasher, Stephen Strasburg, and Coach Vance, who were instrumental in helping create this event.”
Leyva added that this upcoming event originated through conversations between Coach Kevin Vance and himself, as they wanted to create something that would truly engage the San Diego community and Aztec Baseball alumni. Their goal is to position the SDSU baseball program as a true cornerstone of the community.
Given the popularity and success Tony Gwynn had in San Diego for so many years, it should not come as a surprise that his family has been instrumental in helping bring this month’s event to fruition.
“The Gwynn family has been pivotal in helping bring this event to life, with Tony Gwynn Jr. serving as a host for our San Diego State panel at the Dinner on the Diamond,” Leyva said. “Tony Gwynn’s legacy runs deep throughout San Diego, especially within the local baseball community. This event builds on that legacy, strengthening the program’s place within the San Diego community, the college baseball landscape, and on a national level as well.”
As excited as many people are for the Jan. 31 event at SDSU, the momentum does not appear to be stopping there.
“We have several plans in place to keep the momentum going and ensure SDSU baseball becomes a hot ticket in town, and that Tony Gwynn Stadium becomes the first-class venue it should be,” Leyva said. “Our focus is on continuing to invest in player development resources, renewing and upgrading facilities, and creating debt-free college experiences for our student-athletes by contributing to the SDSU Baseball retention fund in this new era of NIL.”
