There are two kinds of winter trips: the ones where the pool is “weather permitting,” and the ones where it isn’t. Florida’s Gulf Coast just added the second kind.
A year-round waterpark opened in late December on Captiva Island, at South Seas Island Resort. It’s the first time the island has had a dedicated waterpark designed to operate all year, with heated water and outdoor attractions that don’t shut down once summer ends.
The waterpark covers just over two acres within the resort’s 330-acre property. It includes multiple heated freshwater pools, a lazy river, six water slides, splash zones with water cannons and tipping buckets and large pool decks with lounge seating. Everything is outdoors, and everything stays open through the winter months.

View this post on InstagramThe narrow barrier island sits off Florida’s southwest coast, reached by driving through Sanibel Island and crossing a short bridge. It’s long been known for quiet beaches, bike paths and low-rise vacation rentals—not big attractions. Until now, winter trips here were mostly about beach walks, shelling and hoping the sun warmed things up enough for the pool by mid-afternoon. Now, a January day can include hours in a heated lazy river.
The park itself is compact and easy to navigate. Slides, pools and splash areas are clustered close together, so families aren’t trekking across the property or losing track of each other. Kids move between slides and play areas, while adults float the lazy river or settle into loungers nearby. You can see most of it from just a few spots, which is ideal if you’re traveling with more than one age group.
Beyond the pools, the resort keeps things simple and family-friendly. A quick-service spot serves burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries and soft-serve, and a nearby retro-style arcade with classic games and air hockey gives kids somewhere to land when they’re done swimming but not ready to head back to the room.

The waterpark isn’t separated from the rest of the resort. It sits inside South Seas rather than operating as a stand-alone attraction, with walking paths that lead straight to the beach, marina and residential areas. Palm trees and open walkways take the place of fencing, and the park blends into the larger property instead of feeling cordoned off.
South Seas itself is a large, self-contained resort and the waterpark is part of a broader reopening effort following storm damage in recent years. New dining venues, refreshed accommodations and expanded amenities have been coming back online in phases, with the waterpark the most visible addition so far.
Accommodations range from standard hotel rooms to multi-bedroom villas that can sleep families of four, five or more. Many units include kitchens and outdoor space. This is not a budget resort—rates vary widely by season and room type, but for most families it’s a planned splurge rather than a casual add-on.
Waterpark access is included for overnight guests, and you don’t need to leave the property or buy a separate ticket to use it. The park is open in winter, the water is warm and the experience doesn’t shrink once peak season passes.
For families planning trips in 2026, that makes Captiva an option it wasn’t before: a Gulf Coast destination where a waterpark trip doesn’t have to wait for summer.
