Inside Crystal Palace’s ‘furious’ talks with Oliver Glasner after outburst

Oliver Glasner’s position at Crystal Palace should be untenable. Instead, it is untouchable.

Across 48 hours, Palace’s FA Cup-winning manager thumped the self-destruct button, culminating in an impassioned tirade after their 2-1 defeat away to Sunderland on Saturday.

This was just one day after he announced he would leave the club at the end of the season, a statement casually sandwiched into a press conference where he confirmed club captain Marc Guehi was set to join Manchester City. He laid the groundwork to declare war on his employers.

Unsurprisingly, it was the decision to sanction the sale of Guehi to Manchester City that prompted Glasner’s outburst in defeat. The Austrian revealed the club failed to inform him of negotiations until Guehi was withdrawn from the matchday squad on Friday morning.

Glasner hurled several damning accusations at the Palace hierarchy, accusing them of “abandoning” the squad due to a lack of depth, warning the club would eventually be punished for selling players without adequate replacements. Wolverhampton Wanderers have learned that the hard way this season.

The final dagger was delivered when he accused the club of lacking ambition beyond securing Premier League survival. This was not the first time Glasner had publicly scolded Palace chairman Steve Parish, but it was the most inflammatory. Civil war is a stark contrast to that first major trophy eight months ago.

Although there is truth in Glasner’s arguments, he seemed destined for the exit door on Saturday night, and his chastising rant – despite its merits – warranted dismissal. He undermined the hierarchy with rhetoric deemed unprofessional behind closed doors, let alone in public.

Palace officials, however, avoided an impulsive decision and waited for the dust to settle. Parish was infuriated by Glasner’s remarks, further deteriorating their already strained relationship, and decided not to resolve the situation himself.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs conducted conciliatory crisis talks with Glasner on Sunday morning, addressing the outburst and outlining the plan to keep him in post until the end of the season.

There is hope, internally, that Glasner will rein in his chiding remarks. But the 51-year-old has a habit of appeasing the powers that be before going rogue again.

Ahead of matches, he is calm and measured, but following a game, his passion breeds emotional responses and he is much looser with his words.

Glasner is an astute operator. He understands that Palace must be a selling club to compete in the Premier League, as they do not have the financial capital to construct a competitive squad without investing in younger players, developing them and selling them for profit.

That is not his issue. Glasner could accept Palace selling Eze in the summer and Guehi in January, if he trusted the club to replace those players adequately.

Palace sold Eberechi Eze for £68m, but when the transfer window closed, the squad was anaemic – only disguised by the euphoria of the club record unbeaten run, which stretched to 19 games before defeat at Everton in October 2025.

Palace had only four available centre-backs for three positions. Factor in three No 10s to play two positions, including new arrival Yeremy Pino from La Liga and Ismaila Sarr – who was expected to miss a month of the season due to the Africa Cup of Nations – and no natural wing-back cover for Daniel Munoz.

They developed a strong XI, but injuries to Daichi Kamada and Munoz coincided with Sarr’s departure to Afcon. Palace’s season stuttered as a result, running into trouble as domestic and European fixtures stacked up.

Glasner made no substitutions in the Sunderland defeat because he did not trust any of the seven outfield players on the bench – who had just 26 Premier League appearances between them – to make a greater impact than the 11 already on the pitch.

He may need to be less stubborn and trust his squad more, though the lack of experience and proven talent available suggests he is operating with his hands tied behind his back.

Several Palace managers have fallen victim to this. Roy Hodgson functioned with limited investment throughout his tenure at Palace, playing survival football to consistently keep the club in the Premier League. Patrick Vieira was backed in his first season and led Palace to an FA Cup semi-final, but received reduced support for his second campaign.

Palace acquired plenty of talent in Glasner’s first summer, with Maxence Lacroix, Ismaila Sarr, Eddie Nketiah and Kamada among the arrivals, but four of the signings were not secured until deadline day.

As a result, Palace made the worst start in their top-flight history, having had little time to integrate Glasner’s principles. Once those ideas began to click, however, they went on to enjoy the most successful season in the club’s history, recording a points total and lifting the FA Cup. Glasner’s request for early business was reasonable.

The past summer was substandard, with insufficient investment in key areas – fewer than £50m was spent on five additions. The impact of European football on the squad was clearly underestimated.

Pino has yet to deliver consistently, but his exquisite goal at Sunderland demonstrated his quality as he continues to adapt to the Premier League. Jaydee Canvot, just 19, is a defender for the future – precisely the kind of signing Palace must make to be sustainable.

That said, they needed greater attacking flair. Eze scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists last season, but no individual has replicated that output, with Palace habitually profligate this term.

Glasner’s claims were not without grounds – but already this season, Ruben Amorim and Enzo Maresca have been sacked for criticising their respective boards. Glasner should have been the third name added to the list on Saturday, yet he has proven he is immune to the sack.

Keeping his job, he has been granted a free pass to say what he likes. His actions do not have consequences, he is merely placated when he steps out of line.

There is little to lose for Glasner. Palace could dismiss him if he speaks out again, but that would prove costly for the club’s Uefa Conference League hopes, which forms part of the case not to sack him.

For Glasner, the biggest risk is taking himself out of contention for his next job if he is deemed a troublemaker, but his record speaks for itself. He is a born winner, proven at both Eintracht Frankfurt and Crystal Palace. The problem is that, at both clubs, his tenure has ended in a fallout with the board.

Glasner was booed by Crystal Palace supporters at the Stadium of Light, with fans split over his conduct. His blow-ups have damaged his standing for some, while others believe he has shed light on problems at the football club.

Last week was the beginning of a toxic divorce. The hope for Palace is that it ends in Leipzig with victory in the Uefa Conference League, reducing the turmoil to a minor blemish on the legacy of their most historic manager.
