Mazloum Abdi says de escalation efforts continue with international support

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi said his efforts to work toward de-escalation and a ceasefire continue, with the help of international parties, calling on “the people to rally around their sons, our fighters, and show courage and faith,” as he put it.

In an interview with the Kurdish Hawar News Agency, published today, Sunday 18 January, Abdi said “the Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo have been subjected to systematic attacks since 6 January.”

He added that these attacks extended to northeast Syria, reaching Tabqa (western Raqqa governorate, northeastern Syria), the southern countryside of Raqqa (northeastern Syria), and Deir Ezzor (eastern Syria).

Abdi said the SDF “made attempts and efforts to stop the escalation and work toward calming the situation, but the attacks are still ongoing so far.”

The Kurdish Rudaw network quoted an SDF source saying Mazloum Abdi was on his way to Damascus, where he would meet Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

At the same time, the US Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, is arriving to discuss the escalation in northeast Syria and the possibility of reaching an agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF.

    Meeting in Erbil

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani and US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack discussed the situation in Syria and the latest field developments.

In their meeting in Pirmam (Erbil, Kurdistan Region, northern Iraq) on Saturday 17 January, the two sides stressed the need to rely on dialogue, understanding, and peaceful means to reach solutions to existing problems and disputes between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government.

Barzani expressed his gratitude for the role of the United States in helping Syrian parties reach arrangements, pointing to the importance of guaranteeing Kurdish rights in Syria’s future.

For his part, Barrack thanked Barzani for his role in the peace process and in calming recent events in Syria, and conveyed greetings and appreciation from US President Donald Trump.

The meeting was attended by SDF commander Mazloum Abdi, the co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Ilham Ahmed, the head of the Kurdish National Council in Syria, Mohammed Ismail, and the US consul in Erbil, Wendy Green.

Barrack had said the United States is seeking to calm the situation and resume talks between the Syrian government and the SDF to implement the 10 March agreement.

In a post on X on Friday 16 January, Barrack wrote: “The United States remains in close contact with all parties in Syria and is working around the clock to de escalate, prevent further escalation, and return to integration talks between the Syrian government and the SDF.”

    Rapid field developments

The diplomatic moves come amid fast moving changes in northern Syria, following a large scale offensive launched by the Syrian government against areas controlled by the SDF. The offensive ended with the army taking control of areas west of the Euphrates River in the Aleppo and Raqqa countrysides. Forces also entered the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor after tribal forces took control of the area.

The Syrian army took control of the west bank of the Euphrates after capturing the city of Tabqa and the Euphrates Dam, southwest of Raqqa, following several hours of clashes at dawn on Sunday 18 January.

In Deir Ezzor, tribal forces took control of the entire countryside of the governorate after the SDF withdrew, though there has been no official announcement of control over the city of Deir Ezzor.

Tribal forces also managed to take control of some areas in the southern countryside of al-Hasakah, such as al-Shaddadi, Markada, the village of Abdan, and the al-Jabsa oil field.

In response to these rapid developments, the Autonomous Administration, the governing arm of the SDF, called for self defense, general mobilization, and taking up arms, urging people to stand alongside its forces to face what it described as an attack by the Syrian army on its areas.

Clashes continue in several areas across the countrysides of Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, and al-Hasakah in northeast Syria, amid ongoing rapid field developments.
