Hispanic Women of Weld County started nearly four decades ago as an advocacy group to help women achieve their goals in higher education. President Hilary Rudisill and Vice President Isela Lozano recently sat down with the Greeley Tribune to talk about how the organization has grown from its beginnings and what it has planned moving forward.
How did Hispanic Women of Weld County get its start?
HR: We were founded in 1988 by Miss Charlotte Rodriguez, and it became a community outreach project to help Hispanic and Latina women achieve higher education.
What does Hispanic Women of Weld County do, and what sets your organization apart from the rest?
HR: It started off helping these women get master’s and doctorate degrees, but over the past few years, we have expanded our scholarships to traditional high school students and non-traditional students who are 25 and up and want to go to college for the first time. We want to support those women who don’t always get that type of funding. Our mission is to empower these women to be tomorrow’s leaders of our community. There’s also not many, if any, similar organizations doing what we do as far as our non-traditional scholarships giving to the people who want their master’s and doctorate’s degree and the older students.
What was a significant moment or event for Hispanic Women of Weld County?
HR: One of my favorite moments every year is during our scholarship breakfast when we get to hear the speeches from the scholarship recipients. Just hearing their heart behind it and how much it means to them, and to know we have like a little, tiny part in that — that’s what keeps us going.
What drives your success?
IL: I believe it’s being out in the community, spreading the word and being out there. Instead of just being behind a computer screen, we’re out there talking to people. And I think people see that.
HR: I jokingly like to say that people just thought we were a bunch of old ladies who made tortillas and they didn’t really know what Hispanic Women of Weld County did. So, I said, I want to get us out there. And we are getting out there now doing events at Aims and at the Cesar Chavez (Cultural) Center (at the University of Northern Colorado) and partnering with other businesses. But honestly and truly, I believe our heart drives our success. I believe the community can see when people are very invested in something. And I feel like people see that we are truly invested in our mission, our vision and our purpose.
What are your goals for the future?
IL: We want add a mentorship program, to give our scholarship recipients a better chance of being successful and let them know we have our back. Because a lot of our recipients are going back to school or are first-generation students, and they don’t have people to go to to get knowledge and help them figure out their way through college.
HR: I feel like sometimes we’re giving these people money and saying, “good luck,” and I don’t want to do that. I want to give them money and say, “how can I support you?” Let’s say someone wants to go to law school and we know somebody else in the community that has been to law school. Can we connect those people? But we still don’t have a great idea what that looks like yet, we’re still throwing ideas out there and seeing what sticks.
