Wisconsin picked up a verbal commitment from Illinois High School State finalist and sprint freestyle and backstroker Sofia Piater for the class of 2031.

Piater is from Naperville, Illinois, where she swims for Fox Valley Swim Team and attends Neuqua Valley High School.
At the 2026 Futures Championships in Madison, Piater finaled in the 100 back (25th — 1:05.48), and 200 back (27th — 2:23.75).
At the 2025 IHSA Girls State Championships, she finished 4th in the 50 free, touching in 23.34 after she set a 22.98 in the prelims. In the 100 back, she finished 7th in 56.44 after swimming 55.91 in prelims.

The Badgers got a new head coach last year, but a number of their athletes saw significant improvement during the season, particularly in the backstroke and freestyle events, which is a good sign for Piater’s improvement.
She sits a little outside scoring position in all of her events at the Big Ten Championships, but she would have been 5th on the team in the 50 free, 10th in the 100 free, 11th in the 200 free, 6th in the 100 back, and 6th in the 200 back.
Piater also has a twin sister, Carolina Piater, who is currently uncommitted for the class of 2027.
