The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated in San Diego Sunday and Monday with a series of community events.

On Sunday, the 44th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade will begin at 11 a.m. at the Embarcadero on Harbor Drive. The parade will include floats, high school bands, drill teams, colleges/universities, fraternities, sororities, churches and peace and youth organizations.

One of those floats will be designed and built by the San Diego College of Continuing Education’s welding students and faculty. The “Hope in Action: A Dream Still Unfolding” float will feature a giant unfolding pop-up book depicting Dr. King’s “Dream.”

Rodney Fowler Sr., 64, a lifelong resident of Southeastern San Diego and retired city of San Diego employee, is one of the students who built the float. Fowler grew up near Valencia Park, two miles from SDCCE’s Educational Cultural Complex. He remembers his seventh birthday coinciding with King’s assassination.

“The Educational Cultural Complex has always been a beacon of hope for our community,” he said. “Dr. King’s vision was about education and opportunity for all, and this parade gives me the chance to give back, honor that dream and celebrate a place that continues to uplift generations of students.”

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System will debut its newly wrapped bus commemorating Black History Month during the parade.

The Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will host a 5K walk/run at 9 a.m. Sunday at the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street and the MLK Harmony Health Festival at 9 a.m. at Waterfront Park.

At 5 p.m., East Village’s Quartyard will host the MLK Weekend R&B Block Party.

The celebration is themed “Choose Courage” and will feature keynote speaker B.A. Parker, co-host of NPR’s “Code Switch,” and live performances from transcenDance Youth Arts, Olivia Mercedes and J. Pierre.

The alliance will present a posthumous award to Viet Mai, a poet and educator, for his “extraordinary public service and his unrelenting commitment to build the Beloved Community envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

“This year … we invite you to `Choose Courage,’ to decide, with intention, to do what is right even when fear and opposition are loud,” said Miesha Rice, advancement director of Alliance San Diego. “Now more than ever, our voices must rise above hesitation.”

The event begins at 10 a.m. Monday at the Balboa Park Activity Center at 2145 Park Blvd.

King was born on Jan. 15, 1929, but his birthday has been celebrated the third Monday of every January since 1986.

Also on Monday, California residents and visitors will receive free vehicle day-use entry to participating state parks for MLK day. The free-admission day is made possible by the California State Parks Foundation.
