Nottingham Forest 0-0 Arsenal Stats: Arsenal Extend Lead to Seven Points But Fail to Take Full Advantage of Man City’s Slip

Arsenal and Forest played out a goalless draw in Saturday’s late kick-off. Check out the best facts and Opta data from the City Ground with our Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal stats page.

With every dropped point this season, leaders Arsenal are made to feel as though they are in danger of throwing away their chance at a best Premier League title in two decades.

A second successive goalless draw following their meeting with Liverpool last week meant that they failed to take up the opportunity to go nine points clear at the top of the table.

However, even though they may be left disappointed to have failed to beat relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, they still extended their lead at the top of the table to a potentially unassailable seven points. After Manchester City’s defeat in the Manchester derby earlier in the day, Arsenal may still be able to look back on this weekend as having strengthened their position.

But Forest would have been the more content of the sides with this result. They should be pleased with how subdued they managed to keep Arsenal, who attacked relentlessly but struggled to produce anything like their fluid best.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta left Bukayo Saka out of his starting lineup, but they still sent the vast majority of their attacks down their right flank in the first half, with Noni MaduekeNoni Madueke consistently running at Forest left-back Neco Williams.

However, it was Gabriel Martinelli on the left side who had the biggest chance of the game, missing a sitter just before the half-hour mark from the second phase after an Arsenal corner.

The visitors had plenty of the ball and got into shooting positions fairly regularly, but failed to have a single attempt on target before the break. In total, they had eight shots – their most without managing a shot on target in the opening half of a Premier League match since Mikel Arteta’s first game in charge, against Bournemouth way back in December 2019 (nine).

His side were unusually lacking in cutting edge, and by 55 minutes, Arteta had been convinced that wholesale changes were needed. After replacing Martinelli with Leandro Trossard at the break, the Arsenal manager made a triple change, introducing Saka, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Jesus.

Madueke is an exceptional back-up option to have on the right, but with key man and captain Saka in tow and the threat of dropped points growing by the minute, meaning greater urgency to their play, much of Arsenal’s play improved.

No team has scored more headed goals in the Premier League this season than Arsenal (nine), and here they predictably carried their biggest threat with crosses and headed efforts.

Saka forced the best save of the game from Matz Sels in the Forest goal with, unusually for the England winger, a looping header from a Declan Rice cross. Moments later, Merino failed to convert a tantalising ball in from Rice, glancing his header narrowly wide.

Forest had their own sights of goal, but as the game wore on, those became increasingly rare. From the hour mark until the end of the game, the home side had only one shot, a blocked Morgan Gibbs-White effort.

But with West Ham having won at Tottenham earlier in the day and with that result, Forest’s cushion to the relegation zone having been cut to just four points before kick-off, avoiding defeat against the league leaders can be seen as an exceptional result.

For Arsenal, this may feel like a missed opportunity, but they still moved seven points clear of City at the top of the table. According to the Opta supercomputer, Arsenal’s chance of winning the title dropped from 89.3% before kick-off to 85.9% after the game, so some may feel this should be seen as a chance missed.

But as was the case at the start of the day, Arsenal remain overwhelming favourites to go on and win the title.
