2000s Hardcore Punk Band Announces 20th Anniversary Tour of First Album

Canadian hardcore punk band Cancer Bats has announced a major spring tour to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Birthing The Giant.

The run will span nearly the entire country, giving longtime fans a chance to hear the record that launched the band’s career, played live from start to finish in many cities. Tickets for the tour went on sale Friday.

The anniversary trek begins on April 3 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and stretches across Canada before wrapping up on April 25 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Support on select dates will come from fellow Canadian heavy acts Anciients, TEETH and Chastity, making the tour a full celebration of Canada’s heavy music scene.

Frontman Liam Cormier, the band’s only remaining original member, shared his excitement about the milestone.

“I can’t believe Birthing The Giant is twenty years old,” Cormier said, according to The PRP. He added that the band is thrilled to celebrate the album “from Coast to Coast” and return to cities they have played in for the past two decades.

Cancer Bats Mark Two Decades of ‘Birthing The Giant’

Released in 2006, Birthing The Giant introduced Cancer Bats as a fierce new voice in hardcore punk. The album blended raw hardcore energy with heavy metal riffs and loud, shouted vocals. Songs like “French Immersion,” “100 Grand Canyon” and “Pneumonia Hawk” helped define their sound and built a loyal fanbase across Canada.

For this anniversary tour, the band plans to perform the album in full on most dates, along with fan-favorite songs from later releases. One exception is their appearance at Pouzza Fest in Montreal on May 16, which will not feature the full album due to time limits. A Winnipeg show is also pending, with details expected at a later date.

The full list of confirmed tour stops includes major cities and smaller markets alike, such as Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Victoria.

The anniversary run arrives after years of nonstop activity for the band. Cancer Bats have continued to tour heavily, release music, and stay visible in the heavy scene, even after setbacks like the 2025 theft of their tour van and gear in the United States.

Today’s lineup features Cormier on vocals, Mike Peters on drums, Jaye R. Schwarzer on bass and guitar, and Jackson Landry on guitar. With loud songs, familiar venues and a clear love for their roots, Cancer Bats are set to remind everyone why Birthing The Giant still matters.
