If your 2026 resolutions include learning new things, meeting your neighbors, and spending more time outdoors, then the San Carlos Community Garden has you covered on all counts.
Located on the campus of the Sierra School of San Diego adjacent to the San Carlos Recreation Center, the SCCG is a joint-use community garden created to grow far more than plants.
Our “Growing Community” mission promotes gardening for nutrition and beauty, knowledge for healthy living and stewardship of the earth, collaboration of neighbors and schools, and spirit through inspiration and healing.
Here’s the 2026 workshop lineup:
Jan. 17 (double lineup): Create Your Own Living Art: Bonsai Tree with Lucky Jade Plants with San Diego Master Gardener and artist Muriel King.
Jan. 17 Backyard Orchard Care—Pruning & Training with Master Gardener Greg Alder.
Feb. 21: Rose Care with Master Gardener and San Diego’s award-winning Master Rosarian, Ruth Tiffany.
March 21: Tomatoes, Tomatoes, Tomatoes with Farmer Roy Wilburn.
April 18: Attract Pollinators with Native Plants.
May 16: Summer Gardening for Small Spaces.
June 20: Walking the Seven Stone Path with local author Peter Bolland.
July 18: Gardening Tool Care & Sharpening.
Aug. 15: Let’s Get Dirty: Compost & Soil Building.
Sept. 19: Design & Create Your Waterwise Garden.
Oct 17: DIY Pumpkin Succulent Arrangement.
Our February workshop in particular deserves a big, bold circle on your calendar and is one of those workshops that can transform your garden for the year ahead.
Ruth Tiffany isn’t just a rose expert — she’s a leader in the rose community and is a local San Carlos resident. In fact, she grows more than 800 roses on her personal property.
“Growing roses in three different gardens over nearly 30 years has taught me, and continues to teach me, of the amazing physical and mental health benefits of this life-sustaining hobby,” said Tiffany.
“I want to teach and show people that the beauty, joy, and healing power of roses can be stronger than the pain, anger, and division that exist so fully in our world today.”
They require advance registration. Workshops are just $10 per class, or become a Growing Community SCCG garden member for $40 per year and attend all workshops for free.
And mark your calendar for SCCG’s Produce Swap on Feb. 22, a monthly gathering where locals share produce, flowers, herbs, and more with others. The event is held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., with live music scheduled for February.
