On Wednesday night, the Chicago Bulls survived a fourth-quarter collapse to stave off an embarrassing loss (and a career night from Brice Sensabaugh) to a blatantly tanking Utah Jazz, riding Nikola Vucevic‘s season-high 35-point night to a 128-126 win. Coby White, back on the roster and in the starting five, had yet another shaky night as he tries to find his rhythm after a calf injury.
Although White and fellow (fill-in) starting guard Tre Jones failed to score in double figures, a whopping five bench players — including, yes, Patrick Williams and Dalen Terry — picked up the slack.
After winning a game they were supposed to (Lauri Markkanen was a late scratch due to an “illness,” Walker Kessler was sitting), the 19-21 Bulls will next face off against the 11-27 Brooklyn Nets in a home-and-home miniseries.

Ultimately, Coby White’s expiring $12.9 million deal could be on the move by this season’s Feb. 5 trade deadline. He’s typically a talented three-level scorer, although his 3-point shooting this season has left a lot to be desired. It doesn’t seem like Chicago’s team president, Arturas Karnisovas, wants to commit big money to a second non-All-Star guard who doesn’t play defense this summer. Semi-contenders like the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves feel like ideal fits. Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints hopped onto the Bulls Central podcast to discuss just how much the Bulls want in a White trade. Siegel predicts that one or maybe both of the Bulls’ two talented guards on expiring deals, White or Ayo Dosunmu, will be moved by the deadline. Siegel notes that, between that dynamic duo and the freshly re-signed Jones and Josh Giddey, Chicago has a surfeit of quality guards who need minutes. There’s no reason to keep four guards when three will do. According to Siegel, the Bulls are currently demanding an unprotected future first-round pick in a White deal — that’s a bold demand for a guy who’s (a) on an expiring salary and (b) may ultimately have a ceiling as a microwave-scoring sixth man on a good team. Siegel counters that a price of three second-rounders could make some sense, although that feels low, too. What about a top 20-protected first or a pick swap, plus a second or two? © Erik Williams-Imagn Images Elsewhere on the pod, Siegel claims that the Bulls will “be selective sellers” at the deadline, and indicates that he himself is rooting for Perspectives Charter School alum Anthony Davis as a possible trade fit. This is an absolutely insane take at this stage. The 32-year-old big man has appeared in just 71 of a possible 123 contests over the past two seasons, and currently remains sidelined for several weeks as he recovers from a hand injury. He’s a slow, plodding big who lacks an outside shot but provides plenty of rim protection and can create in the paint. Still, as a declining big guy who’ll look to draw a near-maximum contract extension, he would make little sense on a Bulls team whose most important player, Matas Buzelis, is 21. Buzelis, who until the Utah game had been thriving sans Giddey, finds himself in rare air this season. Per StatMuse, Buzelis was one of just five players to have notched 50 or more blocks and 50 or more treys on the season — heading into the night.Players with 50+ blocks and 50+ threes: — Matas Buzelis— Myles Turner— Derrick White— Jaren Jackson Jr— Jay HuffThat's it. pic.twitter.com/uwTlPCjwBo
— StatMuse (@statmuse) January 14, 2026 Buzelis had logged a career-high seven consecutive contests scoring 15 points or more prior to the Utah clash. But Billy Donovan had a quick hook for him on Wednesday. Donovan didn’t play Buzelis a single second in the fourth quarter (Ayo Dosunmu assumed the lion’s share of minutes with him gone, along with the four starters), and the 6-foot-8 pro finished with just seven points in 19 minutes of action. Why Donovan isn’t prioritizing the development of a talented young recent lottery pick, the guy with the most upside on the team, is an absolute head scratcher. This Bulls squad is going to get booted out of the play-in tournament for a fourth straight season. Chicago is headed nowhere fast. Development needs to be a priority. With the win, Chicago has improved to a 4-4 record without Giddey (hamstring) or Zach Collins (big toe) healthy. The Bulls need to get used to life without Collins, we found out last night. Donovan told gathered reporters that the 6-foot-9 Gonzaga product would likely not return until after this season’s All-Star break, per K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network. Collins is still in a walking boot as of this writing. Giddey, meanwhile, is slowly progressing, too. “This is a big week for him,” Donovan hinted pregame, per Johnson. The more games he misses as coaches vote on this season’s All-Star reserves, the less likely it is that the 6-foot-7 vet makes the grade. The Jazz game was loaded with celebrity attendees. 11-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles and Chicago Cubs stars Ian Happ, Jameson Taillon, and Alex Bregman were all spotted at the United Center.Simone Biles, Ian Happ & Jameson Taillon in the house for Bulls-Jazz ? pic.twitter.com/0wCzwWd4Gs
