Italy will not have a chance to replicate their silver medal-winning performance from the 2022 European Championships in the mixed 4×100 medley relay, as they were disqualified this morning for a downward butterfly kick into the finish from breaststroke swimmer Ludovico Art Viberti.
They had initially won the second of three heats this morning in 3:45.37, but will miss out on a final tonight that is led by World champions Neutral Athletes B, who clocked 3:43.02 this morning. France (3:44.27), Great Britain (3:45.69), Spain (3:45.87), and Greece all broke 3:46 behind them.
Lamberti led off today in 54.32, with Viberti splitting 59.75 on the second leg. Anita Gastaldi split 57.48 on the fly leg, six tenths of a second under her season best, before Emma Virginia Menicucci anchored in 53.82.
Italy placed 5th at the World Championships last summer in a time of 3:42.19, using a team of Christian Bacico (52.78), Nicolo Martinenghi (58.63), Costanza Cocconcelli (57.90), and Sara Curtis (52.88). With 100 breast Olympic Champion Martinenghi, 100 back world record holder Thomas Ceccon, and Italian 100 free record holder Curtis poised to come into the team tonight, this was a team that had expectations of a podium finish.
Their absence opens up opportunities for France, the Netherlands, and Great Britain to win a medal tonight. The Dutch were 7th this morning in 3:46.68, but will surely use Marrit Steenbergen in the final tonight and switch up their order. Tessa Giele split 58.25 this morning, two seconds slower than her 56.29 split from Singapore last summer, where the Netherlands placed 4th in a national record of 3:40.97.
Great Britain also has lineup decisions to make, with Angharad Evans, Filip Nowacki, and Adam Ramsay-Peaty all in contention on the breaststroke leg. They will need Ollie Morgan to be closer to his season best of 52.41 on the leadoff after he was just 53.45 this morning.
Germany was the main beneficiary of Italy’s disqualification, which allowed them to progress in 8th. They may swap out all four legs, with 2024 World champion Angelina Kohler to come in on fly, 2024 European champion Melvin Imoudu to come in on breaststroke, and Kaii Winkler and Nina Holt on backstroke and freestyle, respectively. They could end up as medal contenders from lane 8 tonight.
