DENVER — Colorado bankruptcy filings increased 11.3% last year, but December filings jumped by 28% compared with the same period a year ago, the biggest year-over-year increase for all of 2025.
That’s according to a BizWest analysis of U.S. Bankruptcy Court data. Numbers cited include all new filings, including open, closed and dismissed cases. Data may differ slightly from official bankruptcy statistics..
Annual filings totaled 8,549, up from 7,683 in 2024, according to BizWest’s review of data. The state recorded 689 filings in December, up from 538 a year ago. Individual filings totaled 684 in December, up from 531 a year ago. Business filings totaled five, compared with seven the prior year.
In the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado, filings outpaced the statewide data on an annual basis.
• Boulder County recorded 23 bankruptcy filings in December, up 53% from 15 in the same month the prior year. Boulder County recorded 14 bankruptcy filings in November. Boulder County’s annual filings totaled 313, compared with 266 the prior year, an increase of 17.7%.
• The City and County of Broomfield recorded seven bankruptcy filings in December, unchanged from the same period in 2024. Broomfield recorded 11 bankruptcy filings in November. Broomfield filings totaled 117 in 2025, up 18.2% from 99 the prior year.
• Larimer County filings totaled 34 in December, up 31% from 26 the prior year. Larimer recorded 39 bankruptcy filings in November. Larimer County filings totaled 509 last year, up 16% from 439 in 2024.
• Weld County bankruptcy filings totaled 61 in December, up 22% from 50 the same month a year ago. Weld recorded 50 bankruptcy filings in November. The county recorded 727 bankruptcy filings in 2025, up 16% from 627 the prior year.
