The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has relieved finance committee chairman Nazmul Islam, effective immediately. The decision comes after the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) called for a nationwide boycott unless Nazmul resigns.
The administrator had claimed that Bangladesh cricketers wouldn’t get any compensation if Bangladesh withdrew from the T20 World Cup 2026. Nazmul had further commented that players don’t deserve any money since they aren’t told to pay the ‘crores and crores of taka’ the BCB spends on them after poor performances.
BCB cedes to cricketers’ demands
After the comments, two Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches on January 15, between Noakhali Express and Chattogram Royals and Rajshahi Warriors and Sylhet Titans, were abandoned. BPL captains Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Mahedi Hasan supported CWAB and asked for Nazmul’s resignation.
The BCB has not just heard but responded to the demands of cricketers. Earlier today, BCB had issued a showcase notice to Nazmul. By the end of the day, he has been sacked him. BCB President Aminul Islam taking over his duties. As a result, cricket will resume in Bangladesh.
“The BCB President has decided to release Mr. Najmul Islam from his responsibilities as Chairman of the Finance Committee with immediate effect. The decision has been taken in accordance with the authority vested in the BCB President under Article 31 of the BCB Constitution and is aimed at ensuring the continued smooth and effective functioning of the Board’s affairs,” BCB said in a statement.
“Until further notice, the BCB President will assume the role of Acting Chairman of the Finance Committee. The BCB reiterates that the interests of the cricketers remain its highest priority. The Board remains fully committed to upholding the honour and dignity of all players under its jurisdiction. In this regard, the BCB hopes that all cricketers will continue to display the highest standards of professionalism and dedication to the betterment of Bangladesh cricket during what is a challenging period for the game, and will do their utmost to ensure continued participation in the BPL,” the statement further read.
