A California man is seeking to become just the third person ever to cross all 50 states on foot — and this week he’s in our area.
News10NBC’s Mat Mlodzinski caught up with him in Lima and found out he’s motivated by something simple that we often forget.
There’s cross-country running – and then there’s running across the country.
Noah Coughlan: Today’s day 89 of 260. It’s my fifth run across America. It’s 260 days, 20 states, 5,500 miles.
“It’s interesting what he’s doing,” said Marilyn MacIntrye. “I have a daughter who runs marathons so it’s nice to see somebody doing something special as a marathon runner.”
If you’re driving really anywhere across the country, you might look outside the window, and see him running through your town. Along his route, Coughlan greets those who cheer him on.
Because while impressive – this run isn’t about him.
“A tribute to the American people. I’m asking the Americans what does the American flag mean to you, in context of July Fourth, 2026 coming up,” he sad,
ME: And every so often, he hits a new town eager to join the conversation.
“New York has shown up big time – ever since I hit the state line. I’ve never seen anything like it.” he said.
Coughlan says he’s “just an ordinary American like everybody else.”
“I’m not a veteran, I’m not a police officer, I’m not a elected official. I just like doing athletic things to challenge myself.”
But the people do notice his efforts – and want to make sure he knows, they see him – and the flag.
John Skiptunas: The community has just come together today to show support for what Noah’s trying to do and create unity by the flag. It’s the common bond that binds us together.
Anthony Gaiter: A lot of times we get in the hustle and bustle of things and we sometimes fail to stop and remember what that flag means and everything behind it.
Coughlan’s got a long trip ahead of him. He’s on pace to cross Hawaii — his 50th and final state on July Fourth. And as his feet trod on forward — the flag helping to keep everything in front of him in focus.
“I put it out of safety to be visible and now years later it’s taken on a whole new meaning. And I’m still trying to figure out what the American flag means to me,” he said.
