Movie theaters around the country will begin showing “The Lord of the Rings” extended edition films in honor of the 25th anniversary of the release of the first movie, “The Fellowship of the Ring” on Friday.
The three movies are adaptations of the series by J.R.R. Tolkien and follow Frodo Baggins, a young “hobbit,” as he and his eight companions make a long journey to destroy a magical ring and defeat the dark lord, Sauron.
For young fans, this is the first time they will have the opportunity to see the films in a theater setting.
“I am particularly excited to go see them on the big screen, because I’ve always been a bit sad that I wasn’t alive to see them come out in theaters,” said Romey Navarette, a junior history major.
One of the highest grossing film franchises, “The Lord of the Rings” films continue to be included in top charts on streaming services like HBO Max and are likely to draw large numbers to theaters participating in the rerelease event.
“I think this story resonates with us as people. We are all so tiny and the world is so big and scary — all we can do is our best,” said Lyn Coupland-Lowery, a graduate student studying German linguistics.
Alex Carlson, a graduate student studying mathematics, said the movies are “a lot more accessible” than the books while maintaining the original story and including many iconic quotes.
“The movies are phenomenally well done, especially for the book to movie adaptation,” Navarette said.
Students also praised the director of the movie. Carlson said that Jackson did “a great job” of connecting the books to the movie.
After watching the movies for the first time, Coupland-Lowery began to explore deeper into the lore of Middle Earth, the world “The Lord of the Rings” is set in.
“There’s so many layers to it,” Navarette said, having the same experience. “Every little thing does have a wholly, fleshed out story behind it.”
“It’s just fun to see it on the big screen,” Carlson said. “Go see it in the theater, especially if you haven’t seen it before.”
Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online for the showing at the AMC Patton Creek Theater in Hoover or the AmStar theater in Alabaster or Birmingham.
