Ollie Pope retired out by Kieron Pollard after Hundred struggle, makes unwanted history

Ollie Pope endured a forgettable outing for MI London against Trent Rockets in The Hundred 2026 as his short stay at the crease ended with him being retired out. The England batter managed only eight runs from nine balls at The Oval, with MI London opting to send him back to the pavilion during their innings.

The dismissal added another unwanted moment to Ollie Pope's recent franchise cricket experience. He became the first specialist England batsman to be retired out in a franchise tournament after MI London head coach Kieron Pollard decided to take him off the field. Pope's innings included just one boundary before Sikandar Raza replaced him as MI London looked to accelerate their scoring.

Ollie Pope came into bat for MI London after Will Jacks was dismissed by Calvin Harrison in the 56th ball of the innings. Jacks was caught and bowled after smashing 39 off 26 balls, bringing Ollie Pope to the crease with MI London needing to maintain their momentum.

Pope began cautiously against Harrison. He defended the first delivery he faced and then pushed another ball back towards the bowler. He finally opened his account from the third ball, pulling a short delivery towards backward square leg for a single.

The England batter then faced Craig Overton, with the bowler getting one to tail into his pads. Pope missed his attempted flick, resulting in a leg-bye. Trent Rockets reviewed the decision after a huge appeal, but the ball-tracking technology showed that it would have missed the leg stump.

Ollie Pope managed to find two runs from the next delivery he faced, heaving a well-disguised slower ball towards mid-wicket. However, his attempt to attack Overton again came up short as he swung across the line and missed the off-cutter.

He finally found the boundary from the 65th ball. Overton bowled a slower, back-of-a-length delivery, and Pope got himself into an excellent position to pull it towards deep mid-wicket. He found the gap and collected four runs.

However, that was as good as it got for Olliei Pope. He could not rotate the strike from the next ball before taking a single against Lewis Gregory, slicing the delivery towards backward point.

After facing nine balls and scoring eight runs, Pope was sent back to the pavilion as retired out, with Sikandar Raza coming in to continue MI London's innings.

Trent Rockets crush MI London by 6 wickets

Trent Rockets produced a dominant chase to defeat MI London by six wickets at The Oval in The Hundred 2026.

MI London, who batted first, posted 147/7 from their 100 balls. Sam Curran was their standout performer with a brilliant 72 off 46 deliveries, while Will Jacks contributed 39 from 26 balls.

Pope scored eight before being retired out, while Sikandar Raza added 16 off 11 balls. MI London finished with 147 on the board, setting Trent Rockets a target of 148.

The Rockets chased down the target in just 90 balls, finishing on 148/4 with 10 deliveries remaining. Mitchell Santner led the charge with an unbeaten 52 off 23 balls, while Tim David stayed not out on 32 from 24 deliveries. The result gave Trent Rockets a comfortable six-wicket victory.

Ollie Pope makes comeback to England Test team

Pope's disappointing outing for MI London comes as he looks to rebuild his Test career with England. The batter has been recalled for England's first two Tests against Pakistan, nine months after losing his place during the Ashes.

The 28-year-old endured a difficult time in Australia, scoring at an average of just 20.83 across six innings before being replaced by Jacob Bethell. However, his performances in the County Championship, coupled with changes in England's leadership group, helped him earn another opportunity.

Ollie Pope welcomed the decision and said he understood the changes England had made to their Test team.

“I understand the change (in the team at the start of the summer). I understand everything that they’ve done over time,” Pope was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“Whatever they’ve changed over the last year or so, the main thing is whatever they think the best team is now. The fact that I’m in the frame for that is a massive positive.”

Pope also has the 2027 Ashes firmly in his sights. His record against Australia remains a concern, with the batter scoring only 282 runs in eight Tests at an average of 17.62, without registering a half-century.

He admitted that his struggles in Australia were not simply a mental issue and accepted that his technique had been exposed against a strong Australian attack.

“I feel like I’ve still got a lot to prove against Australia. The winter, look, it was tough. I had two bad games, which cost me my spot in the team,” Ollie Pope said.

“My technique and my game wasn’t exactly where it needed to be, and against the best in the world, that gets exposed pretty quickly.”
