Sunday’s game between the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Rams could be a brutally cold affair, but Ben Johnson has a strategy to get his team ready.
According to the latest forecast models, the gametime temperature between the two teams could be in the teens, with wind chills in the single-digits and snow possibly in the forecast.
While the teams will certainly have heated benches and heaters on the sidelines Sunday, don’t expect to see them during the week at Halas Hall.
Safety Kevin Byard revealed this week that Johnson forbade the team from using heaters on the sidelines during practices, hoping to get them ready for the frigid temperatures of a Chicago winter.
“I think Ben has been doing a good job of making us practice in this cold weather with no heat,” he said. “No heaters on the field, which has been a complaint for the most part for a lot of guys. But I think in these scenarios in this time of the year, you’re looking back on us like, ‘hey man, it actually might be good that we didn’t have any heaters because our body’s going to be fully acclimated to this weather.’”
The Bears have played a few games in cold weather this season, but none as cold as their contest against the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field, when the gametime temperature was just 8 degrees.
Byard said that experience, along with the team’s practice habits, have them locked in and ready for Sunday.
“Obviously we talk about the Cleveland game, all these other cold games we’ve been in. It’s going to be nothing for us to go out there and operate in the cold weather,” he said.
Since the Rams moved to St. Louis for the 1995 season, they have only played in six games where the temperature was below 30 degrees at kickoff. They are 2-4 in those games, including wins over the Denver Broncos and New York Jets under head coach Sean McVay.
Overall, teams that play in domed stadiums are just 2-15 since 2000 in playoff games played in outdoor stadiums in below-freezing temperatures.
