Chicago law firm Romanucci and Blandin will be representing the family of Renee Good, the Minneapolis woman shot and killed by a federal officer last week.
The firm says it will conduct a civil investigation into the case and promises that its efforts will be transparent.
Renee Nicole Macklin Good was 37 and a mother of three. Multiple video recordings of the event show her car in the middle of the street where she was confronted by several ICE and Border patrol agents. The agents ordered her out of the car, but she tried to leave the scene.
That’s when video shows agent Jonathan Ross open fire through the windshield and the side window of the car. Ross said he was acting in self defense, claiming that Good tried to hit him with her car. Good’s partner and her dog were in the car at the time.
The January 7 killing has been repeatedly called justified by DHS secretary Kristi Noem and the Trump administration, but has also been roundly criticized by Minneapolis’ mayor and the state’s governor, sending tens of thousands of people into the streets around the country.
“Be Good. That is the clear message from her family as Renee’s wish to the world,” attorney Antonio Romanucci said in a statement.
His firm, Romanucci and Blandin, now represents Good’s partner Becca Good, as well as her parents Tim and Donna Ganger and her siblings.
Romanucci also represented the family of George Floyd, the man who died while being subdued by Minneapolis police. He won a $27 million lawsuit for Floyd’s family in 2021.
When interviewed about social changes in the wake of Goerge Floyd, Romanucci said, “five years later i think we have seen the progress we thought we were making, had we not made all the progress that we thought, now may be slipping away.”
Good’s family said they have retained Romanucci “to not only seek accountability for her death but also to honor her life with progress toward a kinder and more civil America.”
“They do not want her used as a political pawn”, a statement says, “but rather as an agent of peace for all.”
The legal process in Minnesota, Romanucci said, will not be straight-forward because law enforcement officers are shielded by various forms of immunity. Also, the cases are usually argued in front of a federal judge instead of local or state authorities.
“This process will not deter us in any way from fervently pursuing justice on behalf of Renee Good,” Romanucci said.
Late Wednesday, Good’s family, who called her Nae-Nae, also released a statement saying:
“She was our best friend with a seemingly infinite capacity for love. Nae-Nae gave everything she had to take care of her friends and family, and indeed people she never met.”
The family is thanking people who have supported them and their daughter since her death. They are also asking for privacy as they continue to mourn.
Since the shooting, at least six federal prosecutors in Minnesota have resigned over problems they say they see with the focus of the Justice Department Investigation.
