Denver Broncos aim to earn fast start on Saturday vs. Buffalo Bills

The Denver Broncos earned themselves a well-deserved bye week after securing the No. 1 seed, but one of the major points of emphasis this week is earning a fast start against an explosive and dangerous Buffalo Bills team.

Denver Broncos eager to earn fast start on Saturday vs. Buffalo Bills

Last year on the road in Buffalo, the Denver Broncos struck first against the Bills when Bo Nix uncorked a deep pass to Troy Franklin to give Denver a 7-0 lead. Against Josh Allen, that lead evaporated quickly and a handful of mishaps, drops, and lack of stops impacted the Broncos from winning on the road against the Bills in the Wildcard round last year.

Since then, the Broncos have made a handful of improvements from a scheme and roster standpoint, but head coach Sean Payton wants his team to get off to a fast start after having a first-round bye.

“The rest is important, but myth No. 2 is that insures the fast start,” Payton said. “It doesn’t. Understand this: We’re playing a team that’s coming off one of their biggest wins in the last 10 years. We have to earn a fast start and take advantage of the energy, take advantage of the rest. But it has to be done out here. Today was a good start.”

That energy resides within the stadium on Saturday, while the Broncos have been putting in the work at practice this week. Denver is well rested, but they have to get off to a hot start and sustain that against Allen and the Bills, who are capable of striking and blowing things open quickly.

Just a handful of weeks ago, the Bills and Allen were down 21-0 to the New England Patriots, but they surged back in the second half to win 35-31. Mitigating that threat requires Denver to be better on third down and in the red zone, on both offense and defense.

If Denver can find a way to create long drives the way they have this season, 10-plus plays that take 8-10 minutes off of the clock, ending in touchdowns, is the surefire formula, but that’s a lot easier said than done, especially against a Bills defense that does a great job of blending disguised looks with various stunt packages to get after quarterbacks.

That will be an emphasis on Saturday.

Dre Greenlaw, Drew Sanders continue to progress in onfield work

For the second consecutive day, linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Drew Sanders were on the field again for practice. There were no notable players missing for Wednesday’s practice.

I did not see J.K. Dobbins on Wednesday, but Luca Evans of the Denver Post caught him on the sidefield, alongside center Luke Wattenberg and offensive lineman Matt Peart.

Safety Brandon Jones, who Payton said yesterday he doesn’t expect to be back if Denver were to make it as far as the Super Bowl, was on the side field briefly before jogging into the building.

The Broncos have one more practice remaining before Saturday’s ultimate showdown against the Buffalo Bills.
