In what has turned out to be an eventful off-season for San Diego FC, the club announced Wednesday that it has signed 2025 MVP finalist Anders Dreyer to a three-year contract extension.
Dreyer, the MLS Newcomer of the Year winner, also has a club option for the 2029-30 season.
Affectionately nicknamed “El Paletero” by the fans – for the vendors who serve up paletas, or frozen treats – Dreyer finished the regular season with 19 goals, among the top three in MLS. He also led the league with 19 assists.
“Extending Anders’ contract was a clear priority for us heading into this season,” said sporting director Tyler Heaps. “He was able to very quickly show his value to this team through his performances, work ethic and commitment to the group on and off the field.”
The news comes just two days after SDFC extended head coach Mikey Varas on a multi-year deal. He earned a Coach of the Year nomination while helping lead the club to the top seed in the Western Conference and a trip to the conference final.
Five days ago, SDFC parted ways with star forward Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. Dreyer and Lozano accounted for 30 goals and 30 assists during the regular season. The duo added seven combined goals during the playoffs.
Dreyer is also a key part of the Danish men’s soccer team, which is currently fighting for one of the final spots in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Denmark must first go through the UEFA playoffs after finishing second in their qualifying group to Scotland. If successful, the team would end up playing in Group A, the same group as Lozano’s Mexican national team (El Tri).
“This extension reflects our confidence in him and our belief that he will continue to play a key role in helping us reach our objectives,” Heaps said.
SDFC opens the 2026 season on Feb. 3, welcoming Pumas UNAM to Snapdragon Stadium in the opening round of the Concacaf Champions Cup. the second leg follows on Feb. 10 at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City.
The club starts the MLS season on Feb. 21 at home against CF Montréal. Single-match tickets for the season go on sale Thursday.
