Close games often highlight a college football season. A review of results between conference opponents indicates where the closest matchups were played in the 2025 FCS season.
Richmond didn’t get the type of record it sought during its first season in the Patriot League.
But the league office in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, must have loved how the Spiders went about compiling their 3-4 PL record in 2025.
All seven of the games were decided by one possession – eight points or less – making for an exciting entrance into the league schedule even if the results didn’t necessarily go Richmond’s way. The Spiders played in over half of the 13 PL games that ended with a one-possession result.
Across FCS football, the 13 conferences embrace close games in league play. In a review of all 2025 season games between two conference teams, including regular season and postseason, some leagues and teams did it better than others.
NEC Football had the lowest average margin of victory in FCS football at 13.35 points per game, with conference champion Central Connecticut State winning a one-possession game four times. The average has to go out to the hundredths to show how the NEC edged the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s 13.40-point average margin of victory.
The OVC-Big South Football Association wasn’t far behind at 13.7. Led by Charleston Southern playing in a one-possession game seven out of eight times, the joint conference had 47.2% of its league schedule decided by eight or fewer points (17 of 36).
Only the Pioneer Football League had a higher percentage of its games come down to one possession – 22 of 44 for 50.0% – with Butler and Morehead State both involved in such games seven out of eight times. The league schedule, however, was a bit feast or famine as the average margin of victory was more than twice as high at 17.2 points, ranking as the fifth highest in the FCS.
The Southland Conference? Well, it was more a team grabbing a lead and building on it as the Southland had the FCS’ highest average margin of victory (19.7 points) and the lowest percentage of one-possession games (27.5) in conference matchups.
