A swim coach at an all-girls’ school in Melbourne has been charged with sexual abuse of a child.
Methodist Ladies’ College swim coach Jayden Brian, 32, was arrested last October for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, according to news.com in Australia.
Briyan was reportedly taken into custody while coaching poolside.
Brian, who is no longer employed by the college, was charged with nine counts, including sexually touching a child under the age of 16, grooming for sexual conduct and possessing child abuse material.
According to police, Brian and the girl connected on a social media application, and then it’s alleged that the two arranged to meet up on Sept. 30, with him agreeing to buy alcohol and cigarettes for her.
The 13-year-old girl then asked if they could meet up on Sept. 25, the court alleges. The two met up in a Mazda 3 sedan, and then police say Brian kissed and touched the child in the car before leaving and giving her a $50 digital card from Amazon later in the day.
After the child reported the incident two days later, an undercover operation was launched, according to the court.
A covert operative communicated with Brian on Sept. 29, pretending to be a 15-year-old child. The court alleges that Brian pretended to be 17.
Through the course of the conversation, Brian requested to meet with the officer he thought was a 15-year-old girl, and then sent a photo of himself wearing a Methodist Ladies College shirt. He was arrested shortly thereafter.
The court alleges that there were upwards of 50 child abuse material images and videos on Brian’s phone and school-issued iPad, and that there is evidence of him communicating with young girls on social media as far back as 2018.
Police have also allegedly contacted a second complainant from an incident in March 2021. Police allege that the woman, who was 17 at the time, met Brian on a dating application and he paid her for explicit images while knowing her age.
Currently, there is a bail argument going on in court between Brian and police.
Brian is seeking bail to live with his parents and fiancé and work at a construction company owned by his aunt and uncle, claiming that Brian cares for his fiancé and that she isn’t “coping without Jayden there to support her.”
Alistair Brian, Jayden’s father, has offered equity in the family home as a bail guarantee and said he would be willing to give the court an undertaking to report breaches of bail.
Police oppose the bail, saying Brian is a risk to the community and that he could target vulnerable underage girls on social media.
Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz heard part of the bail application in court before adjourning the rest of it to Friday.
