After the Chicago Cubs released lefty reliever Hoby Milner, there was still a chance he could return to the organization if there were a little more roster clarity and the desire was there. After all, he was released more or less exclusively because his rehab assignment was up and there wasn’t a clear roster spot available just yet.
Even if that were true from the Cubs’ perspective, though, you could understand Milner not wanting to wait if there were another opportunity. He’s clearly healthy, and he’s been pitching quite well at Triple-A. It’s time for him to be back in the big leagues.
So now he will be, albeit not with the Cubs. The Mariners have signed Hoby Milner, who is already on their active roster. Farewell to a guy who had performed solidly this year, but whose appendix and roster crowding conspired to end his time with the Cubs prematurely. All the best to him in his new bullpen.
As for the Cubs, they’ll save a month’s worth of the pro-rated MLB minimum, but will otherwise still owe Milner the rest of his salary. It was hard to see where and how Milner was going to get another shot, even with the struggles in the Cubs’ bullpen, so I don’t know that this is a huge hit to the relevant depth for the final four weeks of the season.
Even though Milner was solid, the Cubs’ big offseason signings for the bullpen – Milner, Hunter Harvey, Phil Maton, and Jacob Webb – have largely been a bust except for Webb. The other three will not even be around for the final month of the season. Presumably not what Jed Hoyer and crew had in mind when they made the moves.
