ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 17-year-old boy is going to prison for a deadly shooting in Rochester.
Ramell Griffin pleaded guilty to manslaughter Monday in Monroe County Court. On Oct. 7, 2024, Griffin, then 16, shot 18-year-old Devin Barstow with an illegal handgun near the Willie Lightfoot R-Center on Flint Street and School No 19 after an altercation. Barstow ran to a porch on Flint Street, where he died.
Griffin faces 17 to 19 years in prison when he is sentenced on March 6.
“Although he was only a teenager at the time of the shooting, Ramell Griffin is responsible for the devastating loss of Devin Barstow’s life, and also for permanently altering the course of his own,” Assistant District Attorney Michael Caranante stated. “This was a brazen and senseless act of violence that stole a young man from his family and loved ones.”
