An unwelcome inquest has begun at Crystal Palace.
The humiliating defeat at non-league Macclesfield represents the biggest FA Cup giant-killing in history based on league places – a mighty 117 between them.
“We didn’t even compete until the 85th minute,” Richard Amponsah of Palace fan channel Eagle-Eyed Football tells The i Paper.
“That’s disgraceful, embarrassing. Our players thought it would be a walk in the park. It was ignorant of us, and just like us winning it, this is the magic of the cup – shocks happen.”
The shock extends Palace’s winless run to eight games in all competitions. While it was always going to be difficult to top 2025, the club’s annus mirabilis, given the sheer amount of uncertainty at Selhurst Park there are fears over what this year will bring.
Oliver Glasner’s future is the biggest question mark. A frustrating summer saw Palace fail to build on their FA Cup triumph in the transfer market – despite earning £67.5m from Eberechi Eze’s sale to Arsenal – and now the Austrian head coach is into the final six months of his contract.
Glasner and chairman Steve Parish are struggling to settle their differences as the manager continues to be linked to the Manchester United job. The 51-year-old dug his heels in last summer to keep Marc Guehi, blocking a deadline day move to Liverpool, but this current window is the last chance for Palace to make money on the England international as his contract runs down.
Manchester City are ramping up their interest, which could push Glasner closer to the exit. Clubs like Palace walk a tricky tightrope – bigger clubs will inevitably come for their best stars, but losing Guehi after watching Eze and Michael Olise go could be the transfer that stings most of all.
Glasner’s future is the million-dollar question (Photo: Reuters)Wolverhampton Wanderers are a cautionary tale – a club who have repeatedly sold their best players and are now destined for relegation. Leicester City have been in a similar spiral. Both were in Europe not so long ago – Palace fans are right to fear the same fate.
The very foundations of Palace’s greatest era are at risk of crumbling beneath them. It’s not just Guehi who could leave. Jean-Philippe-Mateta, who has twice as many goals (40) as any other player under Glasner at Palace, is out of contract in 2027, making this summer their best chance of getting a fee for the 28-year-old.
Adam Wharton is coveted by Manchester United and a host of other clubs. If he, Guehi and Wharton departed there would be in excess of £150m to spend – but what Palace fans do not want to see is the project resetting to zero. To buck the trend, money must be spent to give Glasner enough assurances to stay.
Yet Parish’s hands are tied. Should Palace successfully rebuild in the summer, he may even feel justified in developing players and selling them on for big profits. Glasner will not want a revolving door of players each summer – so whether he stays for that is the million-dollar question.
“We don’t know if he’s actually made up his mind,” Amponsah adds.
“If he has, we’d rather know. I’ve got this nagging feeling the players already know, and maybe that’s why the form has dipped.
“Even if he gives us one more year, it gives us one more year to prepare for what happens next. If Wharton and Mateta leave and Glasner goes, a new manager has a whole new team to worry about.”

But though the gloom is setting in there is still a glimmer of hope. No FA Cup means there is more rest time and the prospect of going far in the Conference League.
Trying to qualify for the Europa League, albeit 12 months later than planned, would be a far greater platform to build on.
What happens next will define whether this Palace team have another chapter to write – or whether they are months away from starting from scratch.
