Carol Burnett Reveals What She Loved Most About Her Iconic ’70s Variety Show

Carol Burnett recently revealed that working on her beloved 1970s sketch comedy series, The Carol Burnett Show, felt like playing in a sandbox with her friends. In January 2026, the comedy legend opened up to The New York Post, where she was asked to name the most meaningful moment from the long-running variety show. Burnett, 92, had three words: “All of it.”

“All 11 years, because it was like playing,” she said.

Burnett added that even though the show had her name on it, it wasn’t just about her. Instead, she described her co-stars as "family.”

“It was our show, with Harvey [Korman] and Vicki [Lawrence] and Tim [Conway] and Lyle [Waggoner],” she said. “We were a repertory company. … It had my name on the title, but there were sketches where Harvey would be supporting me, I’d be supporting Tim, Vicki would be supporting Lyle. So it was an absolute joy because we got into the sandbox and played.”

The original  Carol Burnett Show aired from 1967 to 1978 on CBS. The series featured comedy sketches, musical performances, and an impressive list of guest stars that included everyone from Lucille Ball and Bob Hope to George Carlinand Joan Rivers. Popular sketches included the famous spoof “Went with the Wind,” the soap parody “As the Stomach Turns,” "The Dentist,” and “The Family,” which inspired the ‘80s sitcomMama’s Family. There was also Korman’s popular Oldest Man bit, and an unrehearsed question-and-answer segment with the audience at the start of the show.

In 2004, Burnett told CBS News’ The Early Show that she especially loved doing the audience segment in lieu of a traditional monologue. "I had so many favorite parts,” she shared of her 11-season run on the series. “I loved doing Q&A to warm up the show. And then I loved doing Eunice and Ed and Mama. I thought they were hilariously dysfunctional. I loved doing Tug Ball and Mrs. Wiggins with Tim because he would do lines that I had never heard in rehearsal, when we were doing it on the air."

While she was on board with the classic sketches, Burnett admitted that she was initially nervous when a producer suggested she do an audience Q&A to open the show.

“I balked at first,” she told Harper’s Bazaarin 2024. “I said, ‘What if they don’t ask anything? Or what if they do and I can’t answer it?’ And he said, ‘Well, we’ll put some plants in the audience.’ And then I thought about it, and I said, ‘No, it’s got to be real.’ ”

Once the Q&As got rolling, Burnett admitted, “It turned out to be one of my favorite things that we ever did.”
