2026 TOKYO NEW YEAR SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Saturday, January 10th & Sunday, January 11th Tokyo Aquatics Centre SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central ResultsThe annual two-day Tokyo New Year Swimming Championships concluded tonight at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, site of swimming action at the 2020 Olympic Games.
The 200m butterfly silver medalist at those Games, Tomoru Honda, proved he is in fine form at this point in the season, racking up two victories at the competition.
The 24-year-old logged a time of 1:51.62 to take the 200m fly handily, defeating the field by over two and a half seconds.
Honda opened in 53.58 and closed in 58.04 to get the job done, checking in as the 16th-fastest man in the world this season. Honda is the reigning World Record holder in this event, owning a lifetime best of 1:46.85 from the 2022 Japanese Short Course Championships.
The Olympic medalist also topped the domestic podium in the 400m IM, reaping gold in a result of 4:06.95.
That beat the pack by over six seconds, coming within about two seconds of his best-ever result of 4:04.89 from 2020.
Honda was entered in November’s Japan Open but was a no-show for all three of his events. His last competition was the Sette Colli Trophy in June 2025, where he finished 10th in the 100m fly (52.65) and 2nd in the 200m fly (1:55.40).
Also making noise on the men’s side was 18-year-old World Championships medalist Tatsuya Murasa.
The teen took on the men’s 200m free where he grabbed gold in a time of 1:42.86, the 2nd-best effort of his young career.
The Central University athlete’s lifetime best rests at the 1:42.48 logged at the 2024 Short Course World Championships, so he was within striking distance of that PB with tonight’s performance.
Honda was also in the race, collecting silver in 1:45.25, followed by Temma Watanabe who bagged the bronze in 1:45.65.
Murasa also topped the podium in the 400m free, registering a winning time of 3:41.40. That marked a new personal best for Japan’s rising star.
Honda earned another silver, punching a result of 3:44.86 ahead of Hideaki Kamikawabata‘s bronze medal-worthy performance of 3:45.70.
As was the case at last year’s edition of this competition, 23-year-old Shiho Matsumoto was the top-performing swimmer on the women’s side of the house.
Matsumoto clocked a time of 4:11.42 to win the women’s 400m free by over three seconds and also captured the 100m breast gold in a time of 1:06.25 as the sole performer under the 1:10 threshold.
Matsumoto followed up with victories in the 200m IM and 400m IM, registering times of 2:07.04 and 4:32.45, respectively.
