The Ataris, iconic punk rock band of the late 90s, is back in the studio, according to bassist Mike Davenport. After a nineteen-year hiatus from releasing music, the new album is reportedly finished and set to be released in mid-spring.
The Ataris, consisting of vocalist Kristopher Roe, guitarist Jasin Thomason, bassist Mike Davenport, pianist-guitarist John Collura, and drummer Chris Knapp, are thrilled to share the record after an emotional journey.
In an interview with Punk Rock Philosophy, Davenport opened up about the recording and writing process, "It has been emotional, and I can tell you that Kris put everything he has into that record. It has been a long time, and before, he was trying to handle too much, and so by getting us all back, he can focus on what’s truly important."

The punk rock band was first formed back in 1996. After accepting a record deal with Kung Fu Records, their debut album Anywhere but Here was released in 1997. The band went on to produce four more studio albums between 1999 and 2007, and has continued tour the world in the following decades, even without any new additions to their discography. The last record they recorded was Welcome the Night, released in 2007.
Although the band has taken some breaks over the years, frontman Roe has confirmed that they have remained together for twenty out of thirty of the band's years. The Ataris remains a large part of the band member's lives, and they is anxious to let fans in on the six-year-long project.
“The new record is done! It’s our first record in 17 years and we’re looking at a March/April release next year. ‘Car Song’ is on it and is a good preview of what to expect on the new album. I am really excited about it! We are anxious to get the full record out and for you all to hear it," said Davenport.
