Dallas Mavericks superstar Anthony Davis won’t be available to face his hometown Chicago Bulls on Saturday. So we’ve got that going for us… which is nice.
That’s just some of the good news for Chicago at the start of this weekend. Health-wise, the Bulls also seem to have benefited from an unexpected three-day break following their 108-93 home loss to the very shorthanded Detroit Pistons.
Chicago was set to host the Miami Heat the night after that Pistons loss. Instead, the combination of all-day rain, abnormally high humidity inside the United Center and melting Blackhawks ice beneath the hardwood made the floor too slippery to play on, and the game was postponed after a two-hour delay.
“It felt like grease was sprinkled all over the court,” Matas Buzelis told K.C. Johnson of CHSN on Saturday.
Now, the time off has allowed the team to heal.
Multiple Bulls have been upgraded ahead of Saturday’s encounter with the Dallas Mavericks. It’s almost as if the NBA should eliminate back-to-back games and, perhaps, shave down their overlong 82-game regular season. But that’s crazy talk. Right?

Most critically for Chicago’s immediate and long-term future is some news out of Dallas. Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon of ESPN report that Davis suffered left hand ligament damage and will be sidelined indefinitely. A surgery would likely end his 2025-26 campaign, but there’s a possibility he may be back this season if he can avoid that. The 10-time All-Star power forward/center is consulting multiple specialists. Jeff Stotts of Rotowire notes that Davis’ left hand has dealt with injuries multiple times in the past, although he has yet to go under the knife for any of them. Mercifully, this likely means that any rumors of a dumb Davis-to-Chicago trade should be effectively dead. Although he remains a great defensive force and a solid interior scoring presence when he plays, the soon-to-be-33-year-old is just such a perennial injury risk — and has been declining physically for years —that he’s not worth what he’ll cost to acquire or pay. Adding the Windy City native would obviously fix the Bulls’ post defense issues, and he’s actually nearly three years younger than Nikola Vucevic. But he’s also in the first season of a three-year, $175.4 million extension he initially inked with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Kentucky product has a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28, although he likely would opt out were he to agree on a contract extension with his new team. Things I didn’t have on my bingo card for this week: a Hall of Fame quarterback comparing a former Bull to Patrick Mahomes. Warren Moon, who starred in the NFL and CFL said the NBA player who he would compare to Mahomes is… Scottie Pippen. “Scottie was just a tremendous athlete who could do anything on the court,” the nine-time Pro Bowler explained to NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson recently. “He played elite defense, ran the offense when needed, and was a great leader. Regarding Magic—as far as impact on the game, no question. But I don’t think Magic was the same level of athlete [as Mahomes]. I could name fifteen guys with that impact, but Scottie has that specific athleticism.” Ken Blaze-Imagn Images It appears that key Chicago reserves Jalen Smith and Kevin Huerter, after being held out of the eventually-postponed Heat game, could both be back in action on Saturday against a 14-24 Dallas team now missing its best player. Smith, who’s been out for a week after a brutal head-to-head collision with LaMelo Ball put him in the league’s concussion protocol, has seen his status upgraded to “questionable,” Johnson reports. Johnson notes that Smith appeared to be in good spirits and putting up shots during Chicago’s pregame shootaround Saturday morning. The Bulls have been winless this season when the 6-foot-8 Maryland big sits. A mobile, switchy vet who can play at either power forward or center, Smith has been averaging 9.0 points on .476/.360/.780 shooting splits, 6.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.8 blocks in just 17.7 minutes per. Huerter, who was struggling with back tightness, is also now “questionable” to play and has been active in the team’s shootaround, per Johnson. Huerter, 27, is on an expiring $18 million contract this year. The 6-foot-6 Maryland swingman certainly won’t net that much in free agency this summer, but he’s been a useful bench piece off the ball — even if his 3-point shooting has been disappointing this year. Red Velvet has been averaging 11.7 points on .460/.306/.745 shooting splits, 3.8 boards and 2.4 dimes in his 32 healthy contests (10 starts). © Kyle Ross-Imagn ImagesMORE BULLS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
