Costco’s ‘Authentic’ Take on Viral Mexican Food Has Fans Saying They ‘Love These’

If you’re a fan of Mexican food, you’ve likely seen a relative newcomer on restaurant menus, despite it having a long history in Mexico’s culinary landscape. Birria, a meat stew originally from Jalisco, is made by marinating meat (usually beef, lamb, and sometimes goat) in a combination of spices, garlic, and vinegar, and then slowly cooking it in a savory broth, or consomé.

Though a tasty meal all on its own, a popular trend with birria is to take the meat and use it in tacos or sandwiches, and serve the broth on the side for dipping, similar to au jus with French dip sandwiches.

The broth is delicious and warming, but if you’re not familiar with Mexican cooking, it can be a challenging recipe for home cooks–until now.

Eagle-eyed Costco fans recently spotted birria bombs at the warehouse giant, which promise that cooks can “prep authentic Mexican birria in minutes” by just adding meat and water. The 7.2-ounce package from EZ Bombs brings three spice balls that have a 24-month shelf life. Per the brand, home cooks can toss up to four pounds of beef chuck roast cut into chunks, four cups of water, and one birria bomb into a cooker of their choice, including pressure cookers, slow cookers, and regular pots, to make birria.

Costco fan site Costco Hype shared a video of the product on sale at a warehouse for $19.99, prompting commenters to give their opinion on the offering. “Need to find this,” wrote one enthusiastic fan as more agreed, saying that they “love these,” and musing that they “guess I gotta go to Costco.”

“As a Mexican who's been eating Birria all my life, these are pretty decent. Not as good as the real thing but if you're making Birria ramen or pizza this is perfect. I made it twice. 7/10,” said one commenter. That seemed to be a general consensus among commenters familiar with homemade birria–these bombs may not be as good as the traditional recipe, but when you’re short on time or don’t want to curate all of the spices necessary to make the consomé yourself, it’s a helpful shortcut.

One commenter complained about the price, saying that even if it were on sale for $14, it’d be “nuts.” Another disagreed, noting that “you have to take into consideration how many chiles, spices and their time.” They continued, stating, “What I can tell you is that it’s authentic and if I go down the street and buy a plate of 3 quesobirria tacos for $15 then paying $14 and feeding my whole family is a deal.”
