On Thursday night, the 17-20 Chicago Bulls were looking to stave off a four-game losing skid with a home clash against the similarly semi-mediocre 20-17 Miami Heat.
Instead, a two-hour delay due to melting ice beneath the hardwood eventually spiraled into a decision from the two teams and the NBA to postpone the action to another day altogether.
It was a strange broadcast to behold (more on that later). But at least the undermanned Bulls, who would have been playing on the second night of a back-to-back Thursday, got a breather. Miami has a game Friday, against the Indiana Pacers, so this Bulls-Heat matchup will have to wait until both clubs have an opening later in their schedules.
Next up for Chicago, assuming the United Center figures out how to prevent the ice for Blackhawks games from melting during Bulls games, is another home encounter. This time, Chicago will host Anthony Davis and the reeling Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, during the Bears-Packers Wild Card Round grudge match.

Davis, unsurprisingly, may actually miss the Bulls game Saturday. He had to depart a Thursday battle against the Utah Jazz with a hand injury. Sources tell Marc Stein of The Stein Line that the 10-time All-Star big will undergo imaging on the hand. The 6-foot-10 Kentucky product has only been available for 20 of Dallas’ 38 games this season. K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network reports that fans’ tickets for the Thursday Heat-Bulls game would be honored at the date of a makeup.Per Bulls PR, game will be made up at a later date and tickets from tonight’s game will be valid for the rescheduled game.
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) January 9, 2026 “Yeah, you could definitely feel (the ice melting). But I think as more people got in the gym and everything, it just got warmer,” Tre Jones said last night (his 26th birthday), per Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic. “So, I think it continued to get a little bit worse and a little more slippery. I think it’s just tough to bounce back from.” Jones has been starting for an injured Josh Giddey over the last week-plus. Across his five games starting for Giddey in this stretch, the 6-foot-1 former Blue Devil has been averaging 10.4 points on .474/.143/.938 shooting splits, 8.2 assists, and 3.2 rebounds a night. © Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra noted that Miami has dealt with a similar issue on its practice court in the past, but they had been able to dry up the court in about 15 minutes. The Evanston native notes, however, that the UC “is a huge building” and thus proved more unwieldy to treat, per Johnson. Johnson adds that Bulls vets Isaac Okoro and Jevon Carter played a game of HORSE while they waited for a decision on the Heat bout. Their contest was ultimately paused at a tie when the two clubs were recalled into their respective locker rooms for the night.Up Okoro and Carter were tied in HORSE when they were called back to locker room t.co/nr6ysq3GgK

— Illinois Men's Basketball (@IlliniMBB) January 8, 2026 In his second season, Chicago forward Matas Buzelis has enjoyed some impressive growth on the defensive side of the ball, asserts Kyle Williams of The Chicago Sun-Times. His anticipation as a stopper has been huge. “He’s seeing it happen before it’s happening, and he’s pulling in [and] putting himself in a position to make those plays,” head coach Billy Donovan said. “That’s probably been the biggest growth I’ve seen in him so far. Defensively, there are times where we talked about some of the isolation stuff, where he gets overwhelmed physically, which he’ll get better at. But the one thing about his shot-blocking is he can’t be there to block shots if he’s not there.” ESPN has gotten a whiff of the Bulls’ flop sweat. The Worldwide Leader is booting Chicago from one of its few national games. Jeff Agrest of The Chicago Sun-Times reports that ESPN is swapping out the Bulls clash against the lowly Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 16 with a Cleveland Cavaliers-Philadelphia 76ers matchup. That’s a savvy move, as both those teams are actually playing for something this year.BULLS FLEXED OFF ESPN: The Bulls-Nets game Jan. 16 is now off ESPN and will tip at 6:30 pm CT. It's replaced by Cavaliers-76ers at 6. The Bulls game was to coexist on CHSN, which now has it exclusively. #SeeRed
— Jeff Agrest #? (@JeffAgrest) January 8, 2026 Per Evan Sidery of Forbes, echoing a report from Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints (heck, he could be citing that same report for all we know), the Bulls are anticipated to try to offload players by this year’s Feb. 5 trade deadline. Sidery notes that only $100 million man Josh Giddey, Buzelis and rookie Noa Essengue will be off the table. The Bulls are 11-19 over their past 30 games after a 6-1 start, which has many teams expecting them to become sellers.Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis, along with recent lottery pick Noa Essengue, appear to be the only players not available in negotiations during trade season. pic.twitter.com/rAmXKGa4hf
— Evan Sidery (@esidery) January 8, 2026 While holding onto Buzelis makes sense — given that he has an All-Star ceiling while still under team control with a rookie-scale deal — Chicago shouldn’t close itself off from trading Giddey or Essengue. Yes, the Bulls should hold off on trading Giddey unless the price is right. While he’s been putting up All-Star numbers this year on a bad Bulls team, his defensive limitations and the fact that the Oklahoma City Thunder instantly won a title when they traded him away mean he shouldn’t be untouchable. Sidery has also revived the rumor that the Minnesota Timberwolves are still considering Coby White as a potential trade upgrade. Sidery links recent lottery pick Rob Dillingham to Chicago as part of the deal. Some draft capital better be involved. © Nell Redmond-Imagn ImagesMORE BULLS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
