Chicago weather: 50 mph winds blowing across the area as flooding, ponding on roads continues

Flash flood warnings and advisories for much of the Chicago area expired late Thursday night, with some rain showers still lingering Friday morning but drier conditions expected as the day goes on, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

Live Doppler 5 radar early Friday showed some rain falling across some parts, including in Cook County and the western suburbs. Many roads and streets were still wet with standing water from Thursday’s quick-moving weather, which brought rain rates up to .5 inches per hour.

According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman, rain totals over the past 24 hours totaled between 2.5 and 3 inches, with a diagonal stretch from Chicago, Worth, Homer Glen, Joliet, Minooka and Morris seeing the heaviest rain at times.

The rain also led to ponding on roads, flooding in basements and even postponed the Chicago Bulls game after condensation on the United Center court.

While the sprinkles Friday morning wasn’t nearly as heavy as Thursday’s system, strong winds were blowing across the area, with gusts upwards of 40 miles per hour.

“Very gusty out there this morning,” Roman warned, with 55 mph winds recorded at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Temperatures Friday were also dropping, Roman said, after the high temperature of 56 degrees hit just after midnight. Temperatures were expected to be in the 40s for the rest of the day and drop into the 30s by nightfall.

By Saturday, another system was expected to move in, bringing a rain-snow mix, with rain transitioning to snow showers in the late morning and early afternoon.

Snow could linger by the time the Bears take on the Packers in a wild card playoff game at Soldier Field, Roman said.

The snow Saturday could bring between one and two inches of snow to much of the Chicago area, Roman said, with temperatures staying in the 30s as the weekend continues.
