HENRIETTA, N.Y. — The Italian flag football team has has already secured a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games, with one local star’s help.
Jared Gerbino, a former Rush-Henrietta football standout, will represent Italy in flag football at the Olympics.
“I think we have a shot of gold. I think it’s going to be us and USA in the championship game again,” Gerbino said.
Gerbino was one of the top quarterbacks in Section V before heading to Dartmouth for college football. In 2016, after committing to Dartmouth, he said, “I really couldn’t go wrong with choosing Dartmouth, you know? I went from a great coaching staff here with great teammates to going into a great coaching staff there. And it’s about the excellence there, just as it’s about excellence here. So I’m excited to get playing there.”
After his college career, Gerbino played football overseas in Italy, which led to an unexpected opportunity. “Flag football was never on my mind, to be honest. Even when I was playing overseas, I didn’t know a thing until I got reached out to by the coaches,” Gerbino said.
“They told me, hey, you’re a citizen of Italy, you can play for the national team,” Gerbino said.
That was in 2022, since then, Gerbino switched positions to receiver and learned the sport of flag football. This past summer, his team faced its biggest challenge yet. “That was pretty cool. We played Canada in the semifinals, and whoever won that game got the first automatic bid to the Olympics for the first time in the history of the sport, is now in the Olympics. So it was really a cool win. And to do it with my teammates and my guys I’ve been playing with for a while was it was a pretty sweet feeling,” Gerbino said.
Gerbino and the Italian team secured their Olympic spot, giving the Rush-Henrietta alum, Hall-of-Famer and coach a chance to compete on the international stage. “I think it’s pretty surreal for everybody, because most people that are asking are kind of generally in my life. And, to know that I’m going to do something like that from a place like Rochester, it’s it’s just a cool experience and it’s a cool feeling. I think for everybody knowing that someone from here has kind of been able to do something like that. So,” Gerbino said.
Gerbino’s journey from local football star to Olympic athlete highlights the pride of his hometown and the excitement for the 2028 Games.
Gerbino was born in the United States, but has Italian citizenship through his grandparents.
