The Hurricanes have clinched a spot in the national championship game for the first time since they lost the 2003 Fiesta Bowl to Ohio State. Multiple star players from that team were in attendance as Miami took one step closer to returning to glory.

Better yet, the Hurricanes will play at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami for the title. They will take on the winner of Friday’s Peach Bowl between Indiana and Oregon.

The Fiesta Bowl provided a classic fourth quarter with four lead changes.

Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss delivered the potential game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Dae’Quan Wright with 3:13 remaining to cap a 75-yard drive.

Miami responded with its own 75-yard drive, ending with an improvising Beck running the ball in from three yards out.

Ole Miss did not go away, driving to the Miami 35-yard line, but Chambliss’ heave as time expired fell incomplete — with lots of contact in the end zone. Miami’s sideline burst onto the field in celebration as orange and green confetti shot out.

Miami would have kicked itself for a long time, as 10 penalties and several dropped interceptions kept Ole Miss in striking distance. The Hurricanes held the ball for nearly 42 minutes of the game.

Ole Miss’ admirable run comes to an end after the program lost head coach Lane Kiffin to LSU before the start of the College Football Playoff. Chambliss became a star during this playoff run as a player who won a Division-II championship a year ago and led the Rebels to a massive win over Georgia in the quarterfinal.

After a scoreless third quarter, Ole Miss worked a 14-play, 86-yard drive that ended with kicker Lucas Carneiro hitting his fourth field goal of the game for a 19-17 lead. The Hurricanes were hit with a targeting call and penalty for a late hit on back-to-back plays.

Miami needed four plays to get the lead back, however, as wide receiver Malachi Toney, an 18-year-old freshman, took a screen to the house from 36 yards out.

Penalties killed the Hurricanes again, as Ole Miss’ 75-yard, go-ahead touchdown drive was saved by third-down pass interference.

But there was enough time for Miami to win its first Fiesta Bowl in program history after an 0-4 history.

The national championship will be played on Jan. 19.

Miami reaches it after its inclusion in the CFP was controversial to begin with, as it was the last at-large bid with a 10-2 record. Those controversies can certainly be put to rest.
