Arizona State fielded four different teams in the 400 freestyle relay during its dual against Grand Canyon on Saturday, and closing out the meet in the men’s 400 race, it was a nail-biting showdown that saw the Sun Devil junior team emerge victorious in a close battle with the seniors.
The senior team jumped out to a massive lead at the final exchange, with Andy Dobrzanski (44.42), Tommy Palmer (43.09) and Jonny Kulow (42.03) sitting more than four seconds ahead of the junior team, which featured JT Ewing (44.23), Reece Grady (46.05) and Filip Senc-Samardzic (43.62) on the first three legs.
Then, on the anchor leg, two-time Olympic medalist Ilya Kharun unleashed a 41.77 leg for the junior squad, running down senior and distance specialist Ryan King (46.19) to earn the victory for the juniors in 2:55.67, with the seniors just six one-hundredths behind in 2:55.73.

The ASU sophomore relay placed 3rd in 2:56.59 with a notable 42.74 anchor from Quin Seider, while Grand Canyon’s top team was 4th in 2:57.10, with the Sun Devil freshman relay 5th in 2:59.03.
In addition to his heroic anchor leg in the 400 free relay, Khaurn also led off ASU’s victorious 200 medley relay in 20.89, a personal best time for the 50 back, and won the 500 free individually in 4:21.16, just shy of his 4:20.55 personal best set back in 2021.
So far in the NCAA this season, the Sun Devil men rank 2nd in the 400 free relay with their time of 2:46.11 from the CSCAA Dual Meet Tournament in November.
