DJ Lagway is returning to his home state of Texas. After 2 seasons at Florida, Lagway has committed to transfer to Baylor, per Hayes Fawcett of On3.
Lagway committed early to Billy Napier and Florida during a standout career at Willis (Texas) High School. Now, Lagway will be playing about 150 miles away from home in Waco. He considered staying in the Sunshine State, taking a visit to Tallahassee to check out Florida State during his transfer recruitment.
A former 5-star recruit out of high school, Lagway arrived in Gainesville with lofty expectations. He was named the 2023 National Gatorade Player of the Year for his stellar high school senior season.
Lagway played in 12 games for Florida as a true freshman in 2024. He became the starting quarterback after Graham Mertz suffered a season-ending injury. In his debut season, he completed 59.9% of his passes for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns, but also 9 interceptions.
Many of Lagway’s highlight moments at Florida came during his freshman season. He led all true freshmen with a 154.9 passer rating (minimum 150 attempts) and posted a 95.8 passing grade on deep balls, third amongst all FBS passers, while recording 12 completions of 40-plus yards. Lagway led Florida to major 2024 upsets of CFP-hopeful LSU and Ole Miss teams and was MVP in the Gasparilla Bowl against Tulane.
Lagway had many ups and downs as a sophomore. He completed 62% of his passes for 2,264 yards but posted a 16-14 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He started all 12 games for the Gators despite a benching during a 3-interception loss to Kentucky.
With Lagway transferring, Florida’s quarterback room features 1 returning player and 2 newcomers for the beginning of the Jon Sumrall era. Tramell Jones is returning for 2026 while UF has signed Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and incoming freshman Will Griffin, a 4-star prospect out of Tampa Jesuit.
